Jeffrey Archer’s "Old Love" Redefines Love Story

The “Old Love” of Jeffrey Archer is a unique amorous tale between two brilliant students of English literature from Oxford. Archer makes an exploration of the theme of love from a completely unusual standpoint. The rendition is fiercely honest while he portrays a chronic sense of envy and rivalry between two sworn arch-rivals in the Oxford University: William Hatchard and Philippa Jameson. Initially, their aggressive competition unsettles their tutor Simon Jakes. In their constant intellectual debates, Philippa confronted the deep, confident voice of William with her high-heeled boldness. The mutual hatred was absolute. Their sharply perceptive and analytical mind refused to be submissive to each other. Indeed, this fierce sense of competition enabled them to outshine everyone else in the field. Given the background of 1930’s she, to him, was “that silly woman” and he “that arrogant man”. Yet strange is the way of destiny that an unusual love story should blossom between the bitterest of academic rivals!

This rivalry assumed an unpalatable intensity when both excelled as toppers in their final degree exam. The Charles Oldham Shakespeare’s essay writing competition fed fat to this fire of passionate jealousy and became a life and death question for each to defeat the other. There were liberal exchanges of scornful remarks between the two to play each other down. However, things took a dramatic turn when William unwittingly discovered about the death of Philippa’s father (who was a Vicar) from cancer, and also, his secret dream to let his daughter study in Oxford and win the Charles Oldham award. The sight of silent sobbing of his proud and powerful adversary stirred up a sudden feelings of empathy in his guts. He got over his tentative doubts and offered to accompany her to her village for the burial ceremony. They held hand for the first time and discovered the new bond of friendship as they started their journey to her village. They communicated with each other spontaneously while returning to Oxford which bounces Philippa back to her normal competitive spirit. She slowly discovers the growth of her new found intense attraction for William. The latter secretly enjoys this interesting conversion in the Vicar’s daughter.

The transformation of hatred into love has always been a captivating subject in itself, and Archer makes the situation entertaining with the employment of sparkling wit in their conversation. They make a visit to Stratford and have meals together. But their first date was far from usual: it is a unique blend of warmth and intellectual antagonism! If this instinctive antagonism triggered a strong sense of hatred before, now it drew them closer. In fact, this killer instinct became a delirious source of entertainment for both. Archer makes the reader question if intense hatred could indeed be an expression of hidden attraction?

Anyway, the situation takes a quirky turn while returning from Stratford. On their way back to Oxford, Phillipa and William had to spend the night in a car as the petrol gauge showed empty. The former obviously did not miss the chance of expressing her doubt about the cerebral power of a person who couldn’t even read a petrol gauge! The day next William gave her the reason why he let the car run out of petrol: He said with a rare sense of humor: “My father told me if I spent the night with a barmaid then I should simply order an extra pint of beer, but if I spent the night with the vicar’s daughter, I would have to marry her.” He came down on his knees and said,” Will you marry me if I win the Charles Oldham?” Philippa answered that “as there is absolutely no fear of that happening I can safely say, yes… ” When William declared his love for her she told him not to show his face in Somerville again if he failed to win Charles Oldham. The readers wonder if the writer reveals Philippa’s secret wish that she could marry himeven at the cost of losing Charles Oldham! Otherwise why would tears come to Philippa’s eyes when a girl informed her that she had won? It was a moment of crisis for her because between the conflicting emotion of ambition and love in her heart, the latter had won and for once the proud girl confessed, “I do love nothing in the world so well as you; is that not strange?”

However, when she discovered that William was a joint winner, her puckish spirit returned as she said ” I take thee for pity” to which William replied ” I yield upon great persuasion… ” They were locked in a passionate embrace, and after that, they were never apart for more than a few hours. Strangely, their honeymoon in Athens ended up in a heated argument over the relative significance of Doric and Ionic architecture!

Later in life, this constant battle of wit prevented their romance from dwindling into boredom and banality. Their serious research works and creative activities, though on different fields, kept them deeply connected. After three years, “with well-received D. Phils”, they moved on, in tandem, to college teaching. But their fierce encounters continued and their sharp wit at each other’s expense would flash across the dinner tables at Oxford. However, those who understood their love felt envious of their unique relationship! They were childless yet their life was not tasteless.

Returning home after the celebration dinner (being declared the Joint Professor), their heated argument over Proust’s monumental work took such an intimidating turn, that a policeman, nearby, asked Philippa “Is everything all right madam?” “No, it is not”, William declared “this woman has been attacking me for over 30 years, and to date the police have done deplorably little to protect me”. Yet, beneath this apparent antagonism, their bond continued to grow stronger with each passing year. Interestingly, their intense love was inseparable from their zealous intellectual antagonism which lent a peculiar aura to their relationship. When Philippa was made the Dame of the British Empire, William referred to her as an “Old Dame” he had to live with now. It is this bitter-sweet flavor of their love which defines their marriage.

The most irritable habit of Philippa to William was her determination each morning to complete “The Times” crossword before he arrived at the breakfast table. One fine morning in June, William, studying the clue, filled in the eight boxes left incomplete by Philippa. Philippa’s instantly retorted that there was no such word. To the delight of Philippa the word “Whym Wham” could not be found in the shorter Oxford Dictionary. William assured her that the word could be found in OED on his desk, made for scholars like him. William left the breakfast table with sharp comments on Philippa’s limited command of English language and that she will have to eat a humble pie at Somerville’s Gaudy Feast as she reads the collected works of John Skelton…

William left with a sigh, kissing his wife on her cheek, wishing he had lost Charles Oldham. Philippa replied that he did indeed because it was highly inappropriate during those days to declare a woman as the sole winner! Having closed the front door, as she entered the kitchen, Dame Philippa suddenly suffered her lone heart attack. She called out to William hoarsely but in vain. The news of her death was conveyed and the story ends with a note of dark humor in the suicidal note of Sir William (who shot himself with his pistol): “Forgive me, but I had to let her know”. There was the volume of the work of John Skelton held open in one of his hand with the word “Whym Wham” underlined neatly, his fingers stiff and cold around it. Such weird ending, subtly hints at the essence of special relationship this couple shared so that they rise above the great marriage vow “TILL DEATH DO US PART.” Archer’s love story excels because death could not part Sir William and Dame Philippa! Even while following his wife to her grave, William felt the need to camouflage the inseparable bond they shared, and the insufferable loneliness he would feel without her… he does it with a wry sense of humor!

Haidong Gumdo – Korean Sword Martial Art – An Introduction and Comparison

It's time to set the record straight about Haidong Gumdo. For those unfamiliar with this, Haidong Gumdo is a Korean martial art focused on the use of swords. The visual aesthetic is familiar to most Americans, and will remind one of the Japanese samurai due to the shape of the sword and the dress which is worn. Haidong Gumdo is about grace. It is about precision, and power. It is about mastering one's own mind and body in the development of physical skill. It is not, however, about cultural imitations or derivations.

The Sword
The sword used in Haidong Gumdo practice is known by multiple names, including hwando and jingum , which is the equivalent of the Japanese word shinken , or "real sword". It is important for those more familiar with Japanese sword arts to realize that the jingum is not a katana, despite certain surface similarities. This is largely related to differences in cutting technique. While historical Korean swords come in many shapes and sizes, the modern jingum is easy to distinguish from a Japanese katana by the shape of the tip and the method in which the blade is mounted to the handle. Quality jingum typically has a wider tip, and are mounted with a pin and bolt in the handle.

The Uniform
The Haidong Gumdo uniform used by the World Haidong Gumdo Federation is something else that causes confusion to those more familiar with Japanese sword arts. This is because of the pants that are worn, which flare outwards similar to the Japanese hakama . As with the sword, however, there are differences between the Japanese and Korean styles. The Japanese hakama are worn outside of the gi (or jacket), while in Haidong Gumdo, the jacket is worn over the pants. Since the top of the pants is therefore not visible, they have an elastic waist, rather than the elbow ties of the hakama.

In addition, Haidong Gumdo makes use of a short sleeved dobak , or uniform. This allows more freedom of movement, without worrying about catching the sword in the sleeve. Finally, Haidong Gumdo makes use of colored belts to denote rank, similar to more familiar arts such as the Korean Taekwondo, or the Japanese Judo.

Relations with "other" sword arts
Unfortunately, the aesthetic similarities between the Korean and Japanese sword arts, coupled with a history of tension between these two peoples, has given rise to a significant amount of misunderstanding and strife in the martial arts community.

This is not to say anything at all negative about Japanese sword martial arts! I feel no need, for example, to dispute the history or legitimacy of Iaido, which is a modern Japanese sword art as practiced by the All Japan Kendo Federation. It is beautiful and graceful, and, I may add, new. The same is true of Haidong Gumdo.

Yet the martial arts community remains plagued by the tension which has exhausted between these peoples for quite some time. As American practitioners of these arts in particular, we should respect each others' chosen disciples. That's not even to begin the mention the negativity which arises from meaningless debts about historical origins, uniform styles, or effectiveness. This kind of slander only serves to weak us in our pursuit of mastery.

So let's move the discussion in a more positive direction. Do you practice a martial art? What do we even mean when we use that term?

The Meaning of "the Way"
I would argue that sports such as MMA ("mixed martial arts") do not fit the definition of martial arts in the traditional sense. The word Gumdo translates as "the way of the sword". "Way" is used here the same as it is used in Taoism. In fact, "Tao" and "Do" are the same character, pronounced differently in different languages. To quote Wikipedia:

"The martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development."

That second phrase is important. A significant part of martial arts practice is mental, physical, and spiritual development. So this would include the various styles of Chinese Kung Fu, Japanese Karate, and Korean Taekwondo, among others. It includes the various ryu of Japanese Samurai Swordsmanship, and yes, it includes Haidong Gumdo, an indigenous Korean sword art. Sure, nothing develops in a vacuum, and Korea necessarily shows influences related to its geographical location and its interaction with other cultures. But that does not diminish the art or its practitioners.

Conclusion
Haidong Gumdo focuses on multiple aspects of swordsmanship, from drawing and sheathing, to forms work and stance training, to test cutting with a live blade. There is no trick to being able to perform these cuts, whether on bamboo or other targets – no stage magic, just years of training and practice. Personal betterment and a constant driving to improve technique are what makes it work.

Martial artists of all disciplines should be interested to see a positive sharing of ideas. Show me some of your own martial arts practice, and let's compare. Anyone in the area is also welcome to visit my studio, Blue Mountain Martial Arts, to see my sword work first hand. Check out http://www.BlueMountainMA.com for more information.

5 Ways To Build A Health Care Brand That Calls To Moms

In order to build a healthcare brand in this day and age, medical professionals have had to undergo a massive realignment to the way they do business. The old business model no longer works, and in order to survive the business of medicine, medicine has had to evolve with the changing times.

However, one thing that medical professionals have always had to do is make the right connection with their customer / patient. When it comes to appealing to mothers, the medical profession has been keenly aware of how important this segment of the population is to medicine. In terms of building a nursing health brand, moms are at the top of the list when it comes to building a brand that also grows. Ways to appeal to mothers include the following:

Base Your Approach with Kids in Mind – Today's family dynamic is different than in years past. Children are being given a chance to be influential in the decisions that surround their lives. A healthcare brand that keeps kids in the loop and a major focus stands a greater chance of being seen as evolved and patient-centric.

Be Mindful of Your Online Presence – The modern parent tends to be tuned in to their technology now more than ever. Any healthcare brand that wants to succeed with moms these days needs to be able to appeal to this "techie" side of things and have a solid website & social media presence. By being able to digest patient reviews, a list of services and amenities, and even make appointments online, a healthcare brand becomes accessible to the go-go mom of today in a way that was not possible just a few years ago.

Better Communication via 21st Century Means – At one point in time, a phone call with a human on the other end of the line was all we wanted in terms of customer service. Today, though, more and more moms are skewing toward engaging with their doctor in ways that are more personable while still maintaining use of the technology with which they are comfortable. Being able to send emails directly to their doctor can be appealing. Offices that send out messages regarding scheduling changes through social media (brand-specific Twitter and Facebook accounts) ties into activities that can engage the modern mom.

Better Rapport with Patients – Believe it or not, even the modern mom appreciates a good bedside manner. More often than not, medical professionals are seen as somewhat removed, rushed due to over-scheduling, and distanced from their patients with many complaining that their attending physician does not even look them in the eye during a visit. By taking the time to address scheduling issues & addressing the in-house staff on better interpersonal skills, a healthcare brand stands to win because word-of-mouth references are the gold standard of a business establishing itself in the community.

Keep It Simple – Sometimes the simplest approach is the best. Yes, a nice website & organized social media presence can be beneficial, but be sure the information you present is easy to digest. Certainly appealing to the modern parent that wants a fully online experience, but never shy away from the parent that still wanted to hear the calming effect of a human voice on the line. It can be easy to create a healthcare brand that is shiny and technologically fitted for the foreseeable future, but medicine is about people.

In the end, a successful healthcare brand is one that appeals to more than just moms; it appeals to the community at large. Success includes an evolved view at how society has changed while always maintaining a foothold on the purpose of medicine – to heal.

Insurance For Coach Houses

Coach Houses are built over 3 floors; similar to town houses, except the ground floor is a single garage. This is a popular and space-saving option for house builders to incorporate all the facilities a modern family needs using smaller plots of land to provide it. It is therefore considered financially economic house building. Economical house building means economic house prices! Everyone is a winner with this new space-saving concept!

This design of property is typically smaller, reflecting just 1 or 2 bedrooms – 3 bedroom coach houses are unusual, but we are seeing them being built more so laately.

The Coach houses are typically 3 connected properties (although in some cases can be more), one property owner will be responsible for insuring all of the garages upon which the block of coach houses are built, and can request that the other home owners – who will have access to their garage with a 999 year leasehold, pay a contribution to the insurance costs, even though the policy is not exclusive to the garages and will include their house too !. It is deemed reasonable however, that the policy holder can request around 25% of each of the other coach house owners towards his buildings insurance costs.

This is an effective way of sharing the cost of insurance and protecting every body's legal liability. The other house owners will also have to have their own Coach House buildings insurance policy however, to insure their own home (excluding the garage of course which is on leasehold through their neighbor) Tricky to follow? It can be without you have been given good advice! You will need to clarify detail of how everyone should protect themselves and their property against being uninsured in the event of a claim! This tend to be when policy holders realize that they are uninsured, in the event they make a claim!

There are usually significant areas of shared driveway space with these plots too, and this liability has to be included in the policy of the coach house owner who is insuring the garages also.

There are policies available to cover these risks, although they can be difficult to find! There are not many available on the market so it can take time to find the right policy for you. The most important thing is to ensure that the insurance policy you choose includes all of these risks and the insurance provider is fully aware of the build, set up of lease holdings, and the shared liabilities involved. Without investing the right time, ensuring that you purchase the right buildings insurance policy, could result in you finding out that you are, in fact, uninsured in the event you come to make a claim!

Choose A Reliable Logo Design Company to Avoid Headaches And Get A Great Service

Normally, businessmen are looking for logo design services that are efficient and help the business develop in the fastest and easiest way possible. In this case, picking a serious and trustworthy company to offer you this type of services is vital.

Services

Lucky for you, some logo design services come with a bigger package than other companies. Here we can include creating logo designs for businesses, stationary design and printing, graphic design, personalized site design, campaigns and brochures for business and so on. Of course, the extra services may cost you a bit more, but at the end of the day you will see that this investment is profitable on the long run. However, keep in mind the following aspects.

Price

This is the first thing that everyone is interested in. And it is quite a normal perspective, since nowdays there are a wide range of design services, offered by many professionals at different prices. And here comes the distinction between affordable and cheap. For example when the price is cheap, you can expect the logo to be "borrowed" from somewhere else. In order to prevent accidents like these from happening, it is advisable to respect the paying range that goes around professionals. This should be a respectable one and it is better to pay a good price and receive quality rather than troubles and frustration.

Professional Services

Everyone avoids hanging around providers that are not serious or trustworthy. Who has the time or the energy to spend on them? No one! So in order to avoid them, pick a reliable company which has a good reputation and offers you professional services. The perfect company should dazzle you with an impressive portfolio and positive feedback coming from satisfied customers. This means that, no matter what type of service you need (logo or site design), the services offered should be delivered in time and professionally. No one likes to wait for a service since we all know time is money.

Money Back Guarantee

A great way to check if the logo design company is true to its standards is to check the customer services. If they are willing to pay back the money you have spent in case something goes wrong, then your chances are pretty good. There are cases when these companies ask for a pay upfront, but this should not worry. Who would want to be taken for a fool and lose money? It would be very unpleasant to work hard at a logo, site or graphics and then be informed that your services are no longer required. Everyone wants to work with serious people: companies with clients and clients with good businesses that can deliver the right services. Thus, if the services received do not correspond to the desires expressed, then a refund should be offered. Do not you think?

Conclusion

All in all, when deciding to hire the services of a logo design company you should remember the ideas discussed above in order to avoid misunderstandings. You will see that when you find the perfect company for your needs, working with them will become a piece of cake. Try it!

How to Hang a Mayan Hammock

Mayan hammocks have very different hanging requirements from the more commonly observed rope and bar hammocks. Following the guide lines below will ensure a safe installation and hours of unbelievable comfort.

How to Hang a Hammock Properly

At each end of the Mayan hammock are loops, called the eyes of the hammock. These loops should be 5 or 6 feet above the ground when the Mayan hammock is installed properly. The distance between supports can be about a foot less than the length of the hammock. For most Mayan sizes, this will mean 11-13 feet. If you have more distance, that is great. Use adjusting bars, and attach the hammock a little higher off the ground. The greater the hanging distance, the higher the attachment points must be. The hammock should hang in a catenary droop with the bottom about 2-3 feet above the ground. The best installations space the supports a little wider than the minimum, and take up the difference with the use of rope. This allows you to adjust easily for stretching.

A Special Tip : The first time you set up your Mayan hammock, hang it, then sit on it, unopened … and bounce your full weight a few times to test the installation and stretch the weave.

From Hammock Stands

If you have one of those typical low hammock stands that fit your old bar hammock. Forget about it. It just will not work. You will need a stand that is taller.

From Trees

Use "Tree Huggers", straps, or a strong rope tied around the tree trunk. Screwing hardware into trees is ill advised. Tree trunks or branches used to support hammocks should generally be at least 6 "to 8" in diameter to support the weight at the attachment height. If you use rope, be sure you know your knots, or you will get to know the ground!

From Posts

Set 10 'pressure-treated 4 "x4" or larger posts firmly in the ground approximately 12 -15 feet apart, depending on the hammock size. Bury the posts at least 3 feet in the ground, surrounding them with concrete, and allow the concrete to cure two or three days before using the hammock. Install 3/8 inch diameter 4 1/2 inch long lag eye screws in the posts for hammock attach points.

Inside Your Home

Locate a stud or beam by tapping the wall or ceiling or by using a stud-finder. You will hear a solid sound when you hit one. Hammer a small nail or drill with a narrow bit to make absolutely certain you're directly on the stud or beam. Locate the center of the beam by tapping additional holes to the left and right of the first one. Once properly located, drill a 1/4 "starter hole, then attach a heavy-duty 3/8" eye lag screw. Then use S hooks and poly rope to attach hammock. You MUST hang your hammock from a structural member such as a wall stud, ceiling beam, or concrete wall, etc. Never try to hang a hammock from plaster or wall board!

One Final Word: TEST BEFORE YOU REST!

Honda HHT35SUKA Brush Cutter and String Trimmer Review

Choosing an affordable string trimmer that can handle regular trimming jobs and heavier brush and weeds is no easy feat. Why? Because there are so many excellent products out there from 4 cycle Stihl's to 2 stroke Echo's. I have a 24cc, 2 stroke Echo that has lasted four years with only minor problems, but needed a heavier duty trimmer for weed abatement.

After perusing the internet I found the Honda HHT35SUKA, a straight shaft combination brush cutter and string trimmer. The price came to less than $ 400.00, which was all I could afford. After a little study I decided to give it a try.

Powered by a heavy Honda 35cc mini 4 stroke engine, the HHT35SUKA is quite heavy. However, bike handles and a double harness make it easier to handle the extra weight. Weighing slightly over 15 lbs, I found I could use it most of a day with little strain. That is saying a lot, since at the age of 59 I weigh in at about 148 lbs, with shoes on.

The product boasts the ability to easily transition between "regular trimming tasks and cutting brush, heavy weeds, and even small trees." However, by the time you dismantle the head, install the saw blade and change to a special blade guard, the cows in the field are gathered around you giving advice. The 10 inch saw blade is included, but is not the best quality.

The 4-stroke engine starts reliably and of course does not require a mixture of oil and gas; the manufacturer resistant upon premium. The 4 stroke engine produces less smoke and less smell and is fairly fuel efficient. The first time I used it I spent too much time in one spot and went through a tank of gas way too quickly. However, once I got into a rhythm it was smooth sailing and fewer refills.

My biggest complaint is that I have to carry pliers with me to extract the used up, shortened string. Plus, you have to measure out and insert two pieces of new string to the correct length, manually.

So, turn off the machine, undo the harness (which does not disengage as easily as advertised), yank out the used string from the head with pliers, pull the string out that I carry wound up in my pocket, cut to measure with hand pruners, insert – sometimes easily and sometimes with pliers – reattach to the harness and restart the machine.

It sounds awesome but I ever got the hang of it and was able to change string fairly quickly, but not nearly as fast or as easy as, say, a bump feed head.

The HHT35SUKA is so quiet that at first I found myself constantly looking down to make sure the weeds were actually being cut. Yes, they were, and at a good, steady pace.

People who are used to 2 cycle trimmers complain about 4 cycles not having enough power. This is because a 2 stroke engine fires only once for each turn of the piston. Every time the piston cycles, the air and fuel mixture is forced in and the exhaust forced out. Therefore, every stroke of the piston is a power stroke.

A power stroke (spark plug igniting compressed air and fuel) for a 4 cycle trimmer forces the piston down, but the momentum of the piston then only drives the exhaust out on its return. The continuing momentum again plunges the piston downwards without help from its spark plug, creating a vacuum above that sucks in fuel and air. When returning upward a second time, the highly compressed fuel and air are again ignited by the plug. In other words, in a 4 stroke engine every other cycle is a power stroke.

While the 2 cycle creates instant torque, the extra piston in a 4 cycle extremely provides more power for tougher weeds and brush, though with a slight delay in comparison to the 2 cycle. Because of their frenetic activity and less lubrication, 2 cycle trimmers tend to wear out sooner.

The HHT35SUKA comes with a double harness and safety goggles, though you will probably want to get better goggles. I purchased face protection that resembles a welder's mask, as the debris jumping up into my face increased in volume and in speed when using the Honda trimmer.

Watch out for rocks when using the blade as the ensuing sparks can start a fire!

The HHT35SUKA has a 2 year residential warranty and a 1 year commercial warranty through Honda. For more details about this trimmer go to http://www.mowersatjacks.com/Product-Details/HONDA/647610#sthash.a5OZt3e7.dpuf

A Look at Shinto Spiritual Practices in Anime

In its most textbook, academic explanation, Shinto defines the spiritual practices of the Japanese people outside of Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism. However, it did not arrive at a conscious title until the arrival of these other faiths. Shinto is a religion that also has been adapted towards many Buddhist philosophies through the process of religious syncretism.

Gods in Shinto, which are also sometimes identified as nature spirits, are known as Kami. Individual Shrines are dedicated to different Kami, and are identified as ritualistically pure places. This outlined ritualistic purity stems from the community with nature that the Shrine shares. Shinto Shrines are generally marked from their entrance with a Shrine Gate, called a Torii in Japanese. This Gate marks the passage of the unclean secular world into the pure world of holiness. Just about every manga and anime series focusing on life in Japan, from Bleach to Lucky Star, either will show a Shrine or a festival that takes place at one.

As was previously mentioned, Shinto has achieved syncretism with Buddhism among some believers. In Tite Kubo's Bleach, one can see elements of both religions. The concept of the reincarnation of the soul is a philosophy that stems from Buddhism, which in turn borrowed it from Hinduism when Buddhism first arose in India. Many of the principals of wandering spirits, however, are a Shinto philosophy. It is also demonstrated in the symbol of the Daruma, or the small red Buddhist statutes afforded to some worshipers. Almost one of these items is found within the Kurosaki household. Of course, among other members of the faithful, this level of syncretism does not occur.

Among more traditional Shinto systems of protection that indicate Shinto philosophy and belief alone, Ofuda are quite common. These are talismans of protection for the household. However, for the individual, a Shinto priest may protect one with an Omamori, or a personal amulet of protection. Omikuji are commonly cast at Shinto ceremonies. These are sheets of paper around which an individual fortune is cast. One reads it and wraps it around a tree. The spirit of the tree will make it come true if it is positive, and ward it off if it is negative.

One final point concerning Shinto is the incredible system of personal honor that it entails. To speak to one personally, one uses a great number of honorifics including -san, -sempai, -sensei ex cetra. Likewise, Shinto has long stressed the demand for protection of others and the willingness for personal sacrifice. Whether it be Shimada Kambei or Okamoto Katsuhiro in Samurai 7, or Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach, anime and manga have long served as an extension for this belief.

Roof Hail Damage – 4 Tips for Homeowners

The storm has come and gone, did your home suffer any roof hail damage? Hail storms are capable of producing hailstones up to 6 "in diameter. These balls of ice fall from the sky with no regard to your roof.

Many factors play into how much damage a hail stone may cause. Size of the hail, wind speed and direction are only a few pieces of the puzzle. The age of your roof's shingles, the type of shingles and if your shingleles are "impact-resistant" can all factor in to the severity of your roof hail damage.

Damage to your roof's shingles can compromise the effective life of your roof and even if not immediately visible, may lead to large scale problems if not identified in a timely manner. Here are a few tips which will help you properly identify roof hail damage.

Tip # 1: Is there any visible damage on the inside of your home? If you see water stains or slow drips on the inside of your home, then you have a problem which requires immediate attention. A new water stain on your ceiling is most definitely a sign that your roof was compromised. If left untreated, the problem will worsen leading to further damage which may require a complete tear-off of your existing roof, not to mention repairs to the interior of your home.

Tip # 2 Are there any visible dents (blisters) on your roof's shinglees? Just because you do not see any damage to the inside of your home does not mean your roof was not damaged. When there is no visible damage to the inside of your home, it may provide a false sense of security. By neglecting exterior damage, you run the risk of damage to your home in the months to come. Even worse is if you do not file an insurance claim within the time guidelines stipulated in your homeowner's insurance policy, you may lose benefits that you are entitled to now.

Identifying shingle blisters requires a visible inspection of your roof. Sometimes blisters may be hard to see. It can be helpful to look for small dings on metal or aluminum vents, downspouts or gutters. It is typically easier to identify these marks than blisters on your shingle. If you believe you have visible evidence of damage, it is suggested that you contact your insurance agent immediately to express your concerns and to find out what your policy covers and the procedures necessary to file an insurance claim.

Tip # 3 Get your own independent professional opinion. There's no denying when a hail storm has blown through town. The National Weather Service records all storm data. If there is knowledge of a storm, and you contact your insurance company, they will most likely dispatch an adjuster. That adjuster represents your insurance company. His job is to identify damage, assess the cost to repair or replace your roof and make sure all of the paperwork is in order to process a claim.

It is suggested that you contact a local roofing company that is trained in roof hail damage for an independent opinion prior to your insurance adjustor performing their inspection. Your roofing company is capable of representing your interests. They should be willing to provide you an inspection and estimate to repair any damages free of charge. More importantly, they should be willing to back up their estimate and make themselves available for mutual consultation with the insurance adjuster. If the adjuster and roofer can agree on the remedy for the damage and the cost, this can expedite the process. In most cases your roofer will be awarded the repair job.

Tip # 4 Get It In Writing. Most insurance companies will only issue a check directly to the roofer. This protects the insurance company from the homeowner "pocketing" the procedures and never repairing the damage. By getting your roofing contractor to agree to the type of repairs to be performed and the costs involved, this will insure that your roof gets the required repairs. If your roofer agreements that the insurance check is sufficient to repair your roof hail damage, then they should be willing to do the repairs for that cost, nothing more.

Roof replacement or repair due to hail damage can be one of the most expensive repairs for homeowners and insurance companies. Making sure that you properly identify roof hail damage in a timely basis, and following the proper procedures will help protect your family's most important asset, your home.

In summary home owners who think they may have suffered storm damage should:

  • Look for visible water damage inside your home.
  • Look for damage to your roof's shingles that may compromise the effective life of your roof.
  • If necessary, contact your insurance agent and file a claim.
  • Consult a local roofing contractor trained in Roof Hail Damage to represent your interests.

Entry Doors- Pre-Purchase Guide To Exterior Doors

Whether you are building or redesigning an older home, the entry door makes a definite statement about you and your home. Since an entry door can be seen both from the street or sidewalk and affects the inside view of your house, you want the entry door to match the look of your house from the outside, and the décor of the entry way or living room.

When you choose to replace exterior door fittings, you have many options to look at. Sometimes people replace exterior door fittings to add curve appealing to the house. You may be looking for additional security features in an exterior door. You may choose an entry door that lets more light in to your house or that adds decorative features not available in your original entry door.

You can choose to install exterior door fittings yourself or hire a carpenter or handyman to do the job for you. Unless you decide to enlarge the entry door opening as part of your remodel project, to replace the entry door is not an onerous task.

An entry door is generally made more solid than a similar design interior door. An entry door may be made of metal, wood, plastic, glass or laminate of some type. An exterior door may also be made of some combination of the above materials.

The entry door can be single or double doors. A patio door or sliding door is another type of entry door. The entrance door may be flanked by narrow windows for an attractive presentation. The entry door can also be topped with a fanlight.

An entrance door often is designed as either raised or lower panels in either vertical or horizontal designs. There are several permutations of panel arrangements which have become quite popular in entry doors. Some paneled type doors have quite ornate finishing with occasional base-relief carvings; however this type of entry door is more likely to be custom-made.

Entry doors are often finished in natural wood, but may also be painted or stained to match the color and décor of the house. Entry doors present a first line of defense against burglars and thieves, so you will want to make sure the door you select has appropriate features in terms of size and thickness. The hardware will also have an impact on the safety and security of the door.

Beach Party Games – Having Fun In The Sand And The Sun

When having a beach party, games are an absolute must. Between the sun, sand and surf, there are plenty of ways to have a great time at the beach and satisfy your competitive instincts at the same time.

"Water-Balloon Challenge" Beach Party Game

Water-balloons and beach party games go hand in hand, especially in this instance. Players pair off, and are given one full water balloon each. Partners must face each other, starting out by standing 2 feet apart. Players must throw and attempt to catch the water balloon, taking one step backwards each time they catch it. Once a pair's water-balloon is dropped or bursts, they must exit the game. The last pair standing are the winners of this beach party game.

"Fruit-Legged Beach Relay" Beach Party Game

At a beach party, games like this one can give everyone plenty of laughs. Players split into two equal teams, with a piece of fruit being given to each player. A bucket for each team is placed down the beach. The object of this beach party game is for team members to take turns shuffling down the beach one at a time with their piece of fruit wedged between their thighs, run back up the beach and tag the next person in line. The first team to place all their fruit in their bucket and return to the starting line is the winner of this beach party game.

Beach party games are a fantastic way to enjoy a day by the sea. And the best part is, getting sandy and sweaty does not matter because you can cool off afterwards.
