Jeffrey Archer’s "Old Love" Redefines Love Story

The “Old Love” of Jeffrey Archer is a unique amorous tale between two brilliant students of English literature from Oxford. Archer makes an exploration of the theme of love from a completely unusual standpoint. The rendition is fiercely honest while he portrays a chronic sense of envy and rivalry between two sworn arch-rivals in the Oxford University: William Hatchard and Philippa Jameson. Initially, their aggressive competition unsettles their tutor Simon Jakes. In their constant intellectual debates, Philippa confronted the deep, confident voice of William with her high-heeled boldness. The mutual hatred was absolute. Their sharply perceptive and analytical mind refused to be submissive to each other. Indeed, this fierce sense of competition enabled them to outshine everyone else in the field. Given the background of 1930’s she, to him, was “that silly woman” and he “that arrogant man”. Yet strange is the way of destiny that an unusual love story should blossom between the bitterest of academic rivals!

This rivalry assumed an unpalatable intensity when both excelled as toppers in their final degree exam. The Charles Oldham Shakespeare’s essay writing competition fed fat to this fire of passionate jealousy and became a life and death question for each to defeat the other. There were liberal exchanges of scornful remarks between the two to play each other down. However, things took a dramatic turn when William unwittingly discovered about the death of Philippa’s father (who was a Vicar) from cancer, and also, his secret dream to let his daughter study in Oxford and win the Charles Oldham award. The sight of silent sobbing of his proud and powerful adversary stirred up a sudden feelings of empathy in his guts. He got over his tentative doubts and offered to accompany her to her village for the burial ceremony. They held hand for the first time and discovered the new bond of friendship as they started their journey to her village. They communicated with each other spontaneously while returning to Oxford which bounces Philippa back to her normal competitive spirit. She slowly discovers the growth of her new found intense attraction for William. The latter secretly enjoys this interesting conversion in the Vicar’s daughter.

The transformation of hatred into love has always been a captivating subject in itself, and Archer makes the situation entertaining with the employment of sparkling wit in their conversation. They make a visit to Stratford and have meals together. But their first date was far from usual: it is a unique blend of warmth and intellectual antagonism! If this instinctive antagonism triggered a strong sense of hatred before, now it drew them closer. In fact, this killer instinct became a delirious source of entertainment for both. Archer makes the reader question if intense hatred could indeed be an expression of hidden attraction?

Anyway, the situation takes a quirky turn while returning from Stratford. On their way back to Oxford, Phillipa and William had to spend the night in a car as the petrol gauge showed empty. The former obviously did not miss the chance of expressing her doubt about the cerebral power of a person who couldn’t even read a petrol gauge! The day next William gave her the reason why he let the car run out of petrol: He said with a rare sense of humor: “My father told me if I spent the night with a barmaid then I should simply order an extra pint of beer, but if I spent the night with the vicar’s daughter, I would have to marry her.” He came down on his knees and said,” Will you marry me if I win the Charles Oldham?” Philippa answered that “as there is absolutely no fear of that happening I can safely say, yes… ” When William declared his love for her she told him not to show his face in Somerville again if he failed to win Charles Oldham. The readers wonder if the writer reveals Philippa’s secret wish that she could marry himeven at the cost of losing Charles Oldham! Otherwise why would tears come to Philippa’s eyes when a girl informed her that she had won? It was a moment of crisis for her because between the conflicting emotion of ambition and love in her heart, the latter had won and for once the proud girl confessed, “I do love nothing in the world so well as you; is that not strange?”

However, when she discovered that William was a joint winner, her puckish spirit returned as she said ” I take thee for pity” to which William replied ” I yield upon great persuasion… ” They were locked in a passionate embrace, and after that, they were never apart for more than a few hours. Strangely, their honeymoon in Athens ended up in a heated argument over the relative significance of Doric and Ionic architecture!

Later in life, this constant battle of wit prevented their romance from dwindling into boredom and banality. Their serious research works and creative activities, though on different fields, kept them deeply connected. After three years, “with well-received D. Phils”, they moved on, in tandem, to college teaching. But their fierce encounters continued and their sharp wit at each other’s expense would flash across the dinner tables at Oxford. However, those who understood their love felt envious of their unique relationship! They were childless yet their life was not tasteless.

Returning home after the celebration dinner (being declared the Joint Professor), their heated argument over Proust’s monumental work took such an intimidating turn, that a policeman, nearby, asked Philippa “Is everything all right madam?” “No, it is not”, William declared “this woman has been attacking me for over 30 years, and to date the police have done deplorably little to protect me”. Yet, beneath this apparent antagonism, their bond continued to grow stronger with each passing year. Interestingly, their intense love was inseparable from their zealous intellectual antagonism which lent a peculiar aura to their relationship. When Philippa was made the Dame of the British Empire, William referred to her as an “Old Dame” he had to live with now. It is this bitter-sweet flavor of their love which defines their marriage.

The most irritable habit of Philippa to William was her determination each morning to complete “The Times” crossword before he arrived at the breakfast table. One fine morning in June, William, studying the clue, filled in the eight boxes left incomplete by Philippa. Philippa’s instantly retorted that there was no such word. To the delight of Philippa the word “Whym Wham” could not be found in the shorter Oxford Dictionary. William assured her that the word could be found in OED on his desk, made for scholars like him. William left the breakfast table with sharp comments on Philippa’s limited command of English language and that she will have to eat a humble pie at Somerville’s Gaudy Feast as she reads the collected works of John Skelton…

William left with a sigh, kissing his wife on her cheek, wishing he had lost Charles Oldham. Philippa replied that he did indeed because it was highly inappropriate during those days to declare a woman as the sole winner! Having closed the front door, as she entered the kitchen, Dame Philippa suddenly suffered her lone heart attack. She called out to William hoarsely but in vain. The news of her death was conveyed and the story ends with a note of dark humor in the suicidal note of Sir William (who shot himself with his pistol): “Forgive me, but I had to let her know”. There was the volume of the work of John Skelton held open in one of his hand with the word “Whym Wham” underlined neatly, his fingers stiff and cold around it. Such weird ending, subtly hints at the essence of special relationship this couple shared so that they rise above the great marriage vow “TILL DEATH DO US PART.” Archer’s love story excels because death could not part Sir William and Dame Philippa! Even while following his wife to her grave, William felt the need to camouflage the inseparable bond they shared, and the insufferable loneliness he would feel without her… he does it with a wry sense of humor!

The Many Uses of the Laboratory Refrigerator

In every laboratory around the world, there is a dire need for refrigeration. Nearly every reagent needed in chemistry analysis requires refrigeration, and some must be kept at a precise temperature to remain stable. Laboratory refrigerators are needed for this purpose, as a regular household refrigerator may not have the stable temperatures needed by the products used by the laboratory.

Most laboratory products needing refrigeration are very sensitive to certain low or high temperatures. Some of these materials can only be safely stored at a very close and precise range of temperatures, so keeping them safely stored around the clock is vital for the cost-effectiveness of the laboratory. Having a precision refrigerator is necessary for this to occur.

Simple household refrigerators are being used for simple cold storage, usually, as in the case of a medical laboratory, post-tested patients’ blood products, urine, and cerebral-spinal fluid, and for the storage of microbiological procured specimens. The refrigeration range of these common laboratory refrigerators is normally from 1C -8C, depending on the laboratory’s protocol. These refrigeration units are reliable as also storing very stable reagents, as all they need is to be under room temperature.

A precision laboratory refrigerator is needed for the storage and preservation of many laboratory products. These cooling units must have a circular-paper temperature monitoring system so any deviation can be taken into account if a material fails in its performance. A digital monitoring device, such as a microchip with an alarm system, is also a great way to assure quality of service.

Laboratory refrigeration units can come with anti-frost fans to keep moisture down inside the cooling chamber. This also allows for a drier climate for dried reagents, or materials that are susceptible to moisture contamination. Moisture detectors are necessary for these laboratory refrigerators, which can be digital or paper 7-day circular printout.

Glass-front laboratory refrigerators are very useful for storing microbiological materials such as media plates, so procurement is easier, and of inventory of supplies can be done without opening the doors. These glass doors are double to triple glazed and have a vacuum sandwiched for excellent insulation. These units are usually fan circulated for even cooling and moisture control. Media laboratory refrigerators can have excellent climate control to maintain the quality of the microbiological media.

Laboratory refrigerators come in many sizes and shapes for different laboratory needs. Bench-top styles are great for storing reagents right next to the analyzer that uses them, reducing trips to resupply the instrument. Upright refrigeration units can be used for storing many reagents and freeze-dried products, and can come with powder-coated stainless-steel racks for easy cleanup from spills. Racks can also be designed for the rotation of supplies, which is good for cost-effective inventory monitoring.

Digital monitoring with an alarm system is a standard with today’s laboratory refrigerators. Computer-controlled cooling and interface can be achieved for the laboratory information management system, so there will be no need for hand checking the temperatures daily. A mobile alarm signal can also be programmed in the high-end refrigeration units, so the laboratory supervisor on the go can be notified of an erroneous reading. Laboratory refrigerators have entered the computer age, and can be specifically designed for whatever your need is in the laboratory.

Baseball Bat Trends – What's Hot in the Wood Bat World

Although the debate about banning metal baseball bats in youth baseball is not settled, high school and college players find themselves playing in wood bat summer leagues more and more these days. "It's clearly a trend," a coach told me last summer on opening day of the John Marzano Wood Bat Scout League in Philadelphia. "Kids know they need to do this, their coaches do too, and the scouts love it. Hitting with wood is a lot less forgiving than metal."

All of this makes for a more diverse baseball bat collection in summer dugouts – from Cape Cod to Surprise, Arizona. And as the wood bat trend spreads to youngger players, parents and coaches may want to know what the elite amateur players are using in tournaments like the World Wood Bat Championships held in Marietta, Georgia at the East Cobb Baseball complex.

In some ways you just have to look at the bats the pros are swinging. The two classics offered by Louisville Slugger, Derek Jeter's C71 and Alex Rodriguez's P273 are both guaranteed by the world's top bat company to be made of pro-stock wood. But if you watch Ryan Howard or Albert Pujols, they may be swinging Marucci bats; and Barry Bonds usually hits with a Sam Bat. Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins have been partial to MaxBats over the past several years. And during much of 2008 Manny Ramirez was doing his dirty work with an X-Bat. As you'd expect, then, Marucci, Sam Bats, X-Bats, and Max Bats can all be found in amateur dugouts.

But do not let the pros be your only guide. There are only about 35 bat companies with bats approved and registered with Major League Baseball. Over 100 other companies make wood bats for amateur players. These companies tend to be small, primarily servicing regional baseball communities. Companies like NYStix, Carolina Clubs, Bayou Bat Company, Hoosier Bats, and the Barnstable Bat Company serve independent league players, adult leagues, and local wood bat teams extensively. NYStix got a real boost last year making bats for New York City high school teams in their first year of play under the city's new ban on non-wood bats. The company's owner told me last winter that he was having a hard time keeping up with the demand.

Amateur players also like Old Hickory (made out of maple!), D-bats, and M-Powered bats. In addition, the more standard stock that can be found with Rawlings, Easton, and DeMarini are common – especially DeMarini's composite wood bat wrapped in a fiberglass sleeve designed to help kids make the transition from metal to wood.

Who knows what bats will be popular next season. Zinger Bats out of Montreal is ramping up their marketing plans. Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, and Dan Uggla all used custom Zingers during at least part of last season. The influx of players from Asia has also been a boon to Mizuno. And when players get hot like Josh Hamilton did in the 2008 All-Star Home Run Derby, there's no question that the bat he used will be on the top of every young hitter's wish list (he swung an ash Louisville Slugger, Model C353; 34.5 inches and 33 ounces in weight; flame tempered with the special Smith finish).

In the end, the move to wood should keep young and old players alike online all winter long searching for just the right bat to start the new season with – maybe not as fun as playing, but certainly a useful past-time while we wait .

Scanning DVD Covers – Hints and Tips

Ever lost a DVD, had your DVD collection stolen or damaged in an unforeseen accident? Strange things happen, which is why more people are backing up their precious DVD collection, which can potentially be worth thousands of dollars. While people are creating back-ups of their movies, many forget to create back-ups of the DVD covers inside the cases. If you want your DVD collection to look brilliant on display then they must have covers. This is why it is good practice to scan your DVD covers collection, especially those rare covers that may be difficult to find on the Internet at a later stage.

Scanning a DVD cover is simple however requires that you have some basic Photoshop knowledge/ skills. We need to make some basic image edits to ensure our covers are just right if we ever need to print them to serve as replacements. Here are some tips to help you get the most from your scans.

– The first tip doesn’t require any computer. Instead I recommend that you remove your DVD cover from its case and place it under a stack of heavy books. It is recommended that you leave it there for approximately a week, however even one day makes a difference. This step helps flatten the spine of your cover and will make the editing process much easier.

– When scanning, ensure you set your dpi(dots per inch) to 600. This will give you a large image with a great amount of picture information and detail. This setting will help to better edit the cover.

– It is recommended that you switch off any filters, such as sharpness, brightness, contrast etc. You will achieve better results editing these settings once the cover is scanned in Photoshop.

– Select the de-screen option. This setting helps remove the moiré pattern(crosshatched effect) which haunts so many scanned images.

– Once the scan is complete you must immediately open the levels tool (image > adjustments > levels) to repair the DVD cover’s black, mid and white tones. For a more detailed explanation on how to use the levels tool, check the link below.

– Fix any dust or rip spots on your cover by using the clone tool. If you are working on a solid color you can use the brush tool, which can be much quicker and highly effective at times. Remember to play around with the opacity settings of these tools to ensure your repairs look authentic.

– Use the gaussian blur tool to remove the remaining effects of moiré patterns (not always necessary.

– Reduce your DVD Cover to 300 DPI prior to saving. We do not require 600 DPI for print and also saves on storage.

These are the basic steps to creating high quality back-ups. Please remember that some DVD covers may require more work than others depending on the age, quality and color of the DVD Cover.

Hamsters Will Rule the World

Is the end nigh? How will the world end? Are we all doomed? Ever since the dawn of time, we have been fascinated by the end of the world. Giant flaming meteorites seems to be the most common theory, but i think the answer lies where we do not expect. I think it lies with hamsters. Yes, those cute little fluff balls that some of us keep as pets. Sniffling away, going 'eek'. Or are they?

When you are sleep, the hamsters head under the earths surface, into a giant lair. Full of them, debating the end of the world. Or rather, how they will ever take over the world. You see, I have a strong belief that they are engineering a super-hamster in the dark depths of the earths crust. Building super-hamsters that will one day crush us, and conquer the world.

Of course, people are not going to be scared of these little creatures, trying to nibble off their small toe. They are clearer than you think. These super hamsters are in actual fact over 10 feet high, with huge sharp teeth, a viscous streak that dwarfs the killer rabbit from the holy grail, and a really mean attitude that even a super hamster can not get elected of the united states.

Lock down the hatches, secure the windows, bolt the doors, the hamsters are going to get us soon.

You see, when the time is right, these super hamsters will rise up out of the ground, laser eyes vaporizing people, giant knife like claws tearing up cars and buildings. Once everyone has turned into classic horrific b-movie victims, its then the real terror will begin. The rest of the hamster army will scurry from their lairs, forcing the human population into the oceans, where the cycle of evolution will begin again. The hamsters shall rule the earth.

Improve Your Home's Value by Building a Home Workshop

Many people have their workshop in an unused corner of their garage or the basement or some other out-of-the-way area. This can prove to be problematic, if the space is needed for other things or if there is not enough room to really spread out one's projects or tools. Building a workshop can solve these problems and also add to your home's value if it is planned out properly.

There are a lot of plans and instructions out on the Internet and provided by hardware supply companies and there is really no limit to the kind of structure one can build, provided that the rules and laws governing one's property are adhered to. It's a good idea to get a copy of your area's zoning laws to find out if you need a permission to build the workshop you're planning on. Also, homes governed by a home or neighborhood association may be limited as to the kind of structures they can build and owners may need permission to build at all.

The plans you choose for your workshop should allow for the inclusion of electricity. Again, there are many resources on this, so I need not enumerate the how-to's of this. The important thing is that you ensure that the electricity running out to your shop is treated as seriously as that running inside your house – it must be grounded and up to code. When in doubt, get competent professionals to install and / or inspect it. Installations of heating / cooling appliances can further make your workshop more comfortable and valuable.

There are many alternative energy generators that are on the market right now. You have the option to augment your power with electricity generated from solar panels or wind turbines. The Internet can show you a great many alternative energy generators if you want to lessen your electricity bill and also take less power from the grid that you share with the people in your community.

Try to build to complement your home. If your home is a 1906 heritage house, try to avoid installing a fire-engine-red steel structure. Instead, go for a building that reflects your home's outward appearance and decor. Acquire paint and trim that matches your home, so that the home and shop present a unified appearance. This helps the shop blend in better with the property. If, for some reason you can not or will not match your home, paint your shop a neutral color or one that complements your home's color. Avoid an appearance that is completely different from your home's; it produces a jarring note that could easily be avoided.

When building, make sure you allow for plenty of storage space and organization. The cleaner your workshop can be kept, the easier it will be to use for you and the better it will look to a potential buyer. Shelves, drawers and hooks are all excellent built-in additions to consider. Also, consider where you are going to put your waste, how you plan to sort recyclables from non-recyclables and allow for the space that this will need.

A home workshop can, with attention to its placement and appearance, add to your home's value by placing a thought-after structure on the property. A home workshop is something that many people are looking for, which can make your home more attractive should you wish to sell in the future. Paying attention to what may attract or repel future buyers is worth it if you want your workshop to increase your home's selling power on the market.

The Architectural Split Level Design

The split level was conceived for the sloping or hilly lot. It takes advantage of what might otherwise prove to be a troublesome difference in elevation and uses it to advantage. As a general rule, a split level should not be built on a flat lot. Mounding up soil in front of the high section to give the appearance of a hill usually yields poor results.

The split level makes efficient use of space. The general arrangement of the split level separates sleeping, living, and recreation on different levels. Little or no hall space is required in a split level house due to its basic design, a positive factor fro consideration.

At the lowest level, there is a normal basement which houses the heating and cooling equipment, storage, and sometimes a shop or washroom. This area is the usual depth of a basement. In some instances the foundation may not be desired and a crawl space provided for maintenance and ventilation. The foundation ordinarily equals about 40 to 60 percent of the space occupied by the house. This is usually enough for efficient use without wasted space.

The next level up from the foundation, the intermediate level, generally houses the garage and recreation area. This area is ground level and then lends itself to these functions. Patios and terraces may be attached to the recreation area which further benefits its use. The intermediate level may also have a large foyer, mud room, or family room.

Slightly higher than the intermediate level is the living level. Typically this area is located at grade also: the sloping grade makes this arrangement possible. The kitchen, dining room, living room and full or half bath are normally located on the living level. The foyer, mud room, and washroom may also be located at this level depending on the layout or preference. Again the use of patios and terraces adds to the usefulness and amplifies the attractiveness of the split level.

At the highest elevation in the house is the sleeping area and bath. The half level difference between the living and sleeping levels affords greater privacy and quietness. Split level houses do have some negative aspects. They are generally more expensive to build than the two story. In most cases, however, they are cheaper than a ranch. Heating may be a problem if not handled properly. The use of zoned heating (separate thermostats for the various areas of the house) will usually solve the heating problem.

Architectural Variations of the Split Level Design

There are basically three variations of the split level design: the side by side, the front to back, and the back to front. Lots sloping from the left or right are suited for the side by side design. This design places the living area opposite the sleeping and intermediate areas. Variation number two, the front to back split level, is suited for lots which are high in front and low in the back. This house looks like a ranch from the front and a two story from the back. The living area faces the street and the bedrooms are on the second level to the rear.

The third variation, the back to front split level, requires a lot that is low in front and high in back. The intermediate level faces the street at grade. The bedrooms are above, also facing the street. The living level is a the rear. This model looks like a two story in front and a ranch in the rear.

Traffic Circulation

A preliminary consideration in designing a functional plan is traffic circulation. Traffic circulation encompasses those areas of the house which provide a means of moving from one area or room to another. Circulation must be planned for maximum efficiency. In a planned planned arrangement the distance from the garage to the kitchen in short and direct. The foyer is centrally located and convenient to all parts of the house. All bedrooms are close to a bath. Few rooms have traffic planned through them. The family room and eating nook are exceptions. An analysis should be made of traffic circulation to determine if the plan is as functional as it could be. Frequently, a slight change in the floor plan can increase smooth flow of traffic to desirable locations.

Brick Paver Durability

How durable are pavers? Do they last longer than concrete slabs? Which is more prone to cracking? If I want a new patio or driveway, which product is going to give me the most bang for my buck? When trying to decide whether to use pavers or concrete, these are some of the primary questions people ask. Lucky for you, we have the answers!

Pavers and concrete are very similar. In fact, both products are made with cement. When you hear pavers referred to as "brick pavers", typically, that means the paver was made with clay instead of cement. Pavers are technically concrete; however, they are produced prior to installation and have to adhere to certain technical definitions to be considered a paver. The definition of a concrete paver is a cement based product that is produced with aggregate, sand, water, and color dye which contains a maximum aspect ratio of four and typically has a surface area less than one hundred square inches. The aspect ratio of a paver is its length divided by its thickness. A common four inch by eight inch brick shape, which is two and three eighths inches in thickness has an aspect ratio of 3.37. The reason the aspect ratio is so important is that it quantifies the durability of a paver. If you have a large concrete slab with a few expansion joints cut into it and you want to determine how strong it is relative to its own size, then the aspect ratio is the quantitative way to figure it out. Let's say your driveway is ten feet wide and one section, between expansion joints, is ten feet long. Now, in order to determine that slab's aspect ratio, you'll also need to know how thick the slab is. Let's give your concrete contractor the benefit of the doubt and say he loved your driveway extra thick and that it is six inches from top to bottom. If you take the length, ten feet and covert it to inches, you'll get one hundred and twenty inches long. Now, divide one hundred and twenty by the thickness of the slab, six inches, and your aspect ratio is twenty! What does this mean? Basically, it means that your concrete slab is a lot longer and wider relative to its thickness and therefore more brittle and easier to crack.

When compared to concrete, pavers cost more. Not only do they cost more to produce, but the steps taken to properly install them are more numerous and costlier than those taken to install concrete. Beneath pavers, one and a half tons of base material needs to be installed and compated for every one hundred square feet of area. This means that not only do you need to purchase this material and pay for its delivery, but you also have to excavate the area you areaving to a depth that will not only accommodate the paver, but also about four to five inches of base and sand.

If you make the investment in pavers, you will not be disappointed. Sure, they cost more than concrete slabs, but they are much more durable and less likely to crack. In fact, most pavers come with a twenty five year warranty against cracking! Their color, shape, and texture options are unmatched and they will last a lifetime. UV Gel Nail Polish – What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages

UV gel nail polish has increased in popularity with women who frequent salons and nail bars. Women try to stretch their manicures for as long as possible to get value for their money, but also because of the time constraints in modern day life. Regular nail lacquer takes a while to dry, even with newer brands that claim to dry in 15 seconds or less. A UV gel polish, in contrast requires a nail curing lamp to set, but once that’s done, no additional drying time is required. This makes it preferable to women who have busy lives and don’t have time for regular salon visits.

So, what is UV gel nail polish?

Like traditional nail lacquer sold in stores and used at salons or nail bars, UV gel nail polish comes in different colors and is applied using a brush. The bottles of polish usually come with their own brushes, but some brands sell the polish in little pots which have to be applied using a long handled brush sold separately. While both forms of polish are best applied using thin coats, UV gel polish has to be cured between each coat before a new one is painted over it. A nail curing lamp is required to cure gel polish.

What are the advantages of using a gel nail polish?

Gel polish is favored over regular lacquer because of the benefits it has to offer. The most important being the amount of time it can stay on the nail without chipping, even when regularly exposed to soap water, and hand crèmes. UV gel polish sets in minutes and the client is usually able to use their hands as normal without fear of smudging their polish. It is a practical option for women who don’t have time for regular salon visits as it can last up to two weeks or longer, depending on the brand of polish used and the condition of the underlying nail.

Are there any disadvantages to using a gel nail polish?

The main disadvantage used to be the cost of application. Application required visiting a salon to have a nail technician apply the polish. This has however changed as gel polish is now available to purchase for home use. The cost of buying your own gel polish kit is quite significant, however if you consider the amount you spend on your salon visits, the upfront costs won’t seem as excessive.

Another disadvantage to gel polish is the amount of time it takes to remove it from your nails. Gel polish cannot be removed using regular nail polish remover, instead an acetone based remover has to be used. The acetone is either applied to the nail by soaking it in cotton wool, before placing it on the nail bed and wrapping it with foil, or soaking the fingers in acetone in a nail bowl. The soak off process can take anything from 15 to 20 minutes. Again the soak off process can be done at home, at a time that is suitable or convenient.

The final disadvantage is the gap that appears when your nail grows out. If your nails grow really rapidly, you may have to increase the frequency of your UV gel polish applications.

All these disadvantages can easily be mitigated. Like any other beauty product on the market, improper application or removal of gel polish can damage your nails.

How to Convert a Desktop Computer to WiFi

WiFi or wireless fidelity connection makes internet connection a lot more convenient. In this way, you can connect more computer to a wireless connection to anywhere in the house. The process is fairly easy as long as you have the right tools to use.

You need to make your desktop computer wireless ready first. While you can connect to a wireless router using an Ethernet cable, it is still better to connect using wireless signals as this is really the whole point of the process.

Unfortunately, most Desktop PCs are not yet wireless ready. If your computer belongs to them, you can purchase wireless card and install it in your mother board the same way you will install a memory card.

The next thing you need to do is to purchase a competent wireless router. This usually costs less than a hundred dollars for a decent brand. Once you have these ready, do the following steps:

Step 1: Place your router on an area where it can transmit signal to every part of the house easily. This should be next to your DSL or wireless internet adapter. If you are using DSL, you can remove the Ethernet connection that connects the modem to your desktop. Connect one end to the modem and the other end at the back port of the router.

Step 2: Now that your desktop is wireless ready, it should be able to pick up signals once you turn on the computer, router and modem. Turn the modem first and then the router and then your computer. Allow the router and modem to process the connection first.

Step 3: Do some configurations to your wifi connection. Log on to the IP address of your router settings, input password and username and then change SSID settings and password settings to make it more secure. Now that you have wireless connection, other computers can enter your local area connection.

Step 4: Save the changes you made and then click log off router settings. You can connect as many computers as you can. As long as it is wireless ready, it will already pick up signal. Just input the router password to the other computers and you should be able to connect to the computer.

Just follow these steps in converting your desktop PC into a computer that is wireless ready. Be able to experience the benefits of connecting and communicating with other computers without the cumbersome and restrictive cables and wires.

10 Ways to Help Your Dog Get Over Their Fear of Being Alone

Being social animals, dogs HATE being left alone. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part a dog wants to be with their pack, be it you, your family, another dog, a cat, or even a bird. There is a sense of insecurity and vulnerability when left alone. Feeling abandoned, some will panic. By relieving himself all over the house, a dog reassures himself this territory is his. His path of destruction is simply a way of reducing boredom and separation anxiety.

Dogs whine, bark and howl intuitively, in hopes that you will hear and return to them. When separated in the wild, it is how they find each other. They have no concept of work, shopping or school. To your dog, each time you leave the house, you have gone out on a hunt without them, and may never return.

A closed door to your dog is tantamount to popping a boulder at the entrance of their den. NEVER put your dog in a room with a closed door. Use a half door (it is less defining) or baby gate, so they can smell, see, hear and sense that they are not completely cut off from their comfort zone and environment.

There are a number of steps you can take, to help your dog feel less anxious while you are gone. First and foremost, dog proof the area, just as you would for a child. Remove anything they can chew or choke on, remove all chemicals, raise wires, unplug anything electrical they have access to. They will get into anything, when bored or feel anxious. Most dogs sleep practically the entire time you are gone, when in a protected restricted area or crate. That's why they are so full of energy, as you walk through the door! Give them a comfy bed, a few safe, tough toys or chew items, a couple of trips, and just enough water to wet their whistle.

10 suggestions for helping your dog feel less anxious when you leave the house are:

1. CRATE / WIRE – A crate is not as cavernous as an empty room or the entire house. Most dogs are quite comfortable and surprisingly to some, feel extremely secure in their crate. Inherently, to them it's a sheltered, secure den.

2. GATE: Certain dogs do not mind being restricted, as long as they can see what's going on on the rest of the house. If that's the case, a high quality baby or dog gate is a great solution to the problem. Your dog will not have the run of the house for a search and destroy mission, yet they will not feel rejected. It is also a great way to keep the dog from being underfoot, yet feel included, when you have a house full of guests. Make sure your dog learners to respect the gate, before leaving them for any extended period of time.

3. COMPANION – Another dog would be terrific, but it does not need to have a dog. Many enjoy the company of any animal, be it a cat, rabbit, or bird. Oddly, while living under the same roof, dogs often bond with these unnatural "pack members."

4. ENTERTAINMENT – Find safe, quality, durable toys or chew items to help keep him employed. Rotate them, so your dog looks forward to something "new".

5. NOISE – White noise works wonders. A radio, in another room, with the volume set low, on a soft music, talk show or even the weather channel, offers your dog a sense of tranquility and human companionship. It also helps filter distracting outside noises.

6. OBEDIENCE TRAINING – Find a local trainer who applies positive reinforcement, punishment-free methods of training. Spend quality time everyday working on obedience skills with your dog, to build up their self-confidence. They appreciate your undivided focus on them, and you get a well-behaved dog. It's a win-win situation.

7. EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE! – Tire your dog out, BEFORE you put them up for the day. A vigilous 20-30 minute walk, or tiring game of "FETCH" before leaving them, will help take the edge off. A tired dog is a good dog!

8. HELLOS & GOOD BYES – Keep the hellos and good-byes low keyed. Do not make your entrance and exit melodramatic. Your dog feeds off your behavior and emotions. If they whimper, whine or bark as you leave, go back, make a firm correction, then ignore them, and walk out the door.

9. CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE – Nearly all of us are creatures of habits. We do not realize it, but unconsciously we follow a pattern routine, before leaving the house. Dogs are very in-tuned to it. Change your routine daily, so your dog does not get anxious, sensing your departure. Get your keys BEFORE your brush your teeth. Put your shoes on, then grab a magazine and act as if you are reading it or pour yourself a cup of coffee and sit. Then get up and walk out the door. No good-byes! When they see you are not going through your regular departure ritual, they will drop their guard, and be less anxious.

10. DOG WALKER / DOGGIE DAYCARE – If your dog must be left alone for 8 or more hours per day, consider using a dog walking service, and / or enrolling them in a doggie daycare at least twice a week. Not only will your dog will appreciate the social interaction with humans and dog playmates; it breaks the monotony of their day, and gives them something to look forward to.

Work at building up your dog's self-confidence and break down their anxiety of being left alone, by short separation exercises. Begin with 5-10 minutes; then slowly lengthen the time. It takes a fervent commitment on your part, but it reassures your dog, you will return to them.

BOTTOM LINE: Ultimately, nearly all dogs adjust to human routines. However, there are a few, who will never adjust to being left behind. To keep them, your house and belongings safe, definitely work on crate / wire kennel training. Your dog will gradually get adjusted to it.

What Are Bound Carpet Remnants?

There is a huge misunderstanding when it comes to the term “bound carpet remnants”, as people tend to confuse this with small area carpeting, and this is just not true. A bound carpet simply means that a roll of carpet is covered in paper or plastic, and bound with rope, twine, or tape, and is ready to be shipped. What they confuse it with is carpet binding, and that means to take a remnant or small piece of carpeting and sew edging around sides to make it into a useable area piece for the kitchen, breakfast nook, or wherever it will fit tastefully.

The one thing this buzz phrase is good for is when calling around and shopping for this type of carpeting, and you ask the rep on the phone what type of bound carpet remnants they have in stock. This means they just came in and have not usually been sitting around the store for very long. The reason they come this way, is that a carpet maker may have run out of that particle resource when weaving the carpet together, and they did not have enough to make a complete roll of standard length. Another possibility is that the carpet was special ordered and the order was canceled in the middle of production, and this is what was left of the production run.

Sometimes you can get lucky enough to call various shops and they will have the carpet types in this set up, and buy say purchasing three of the bound product you can have enough to carpet your entire house. This will only work usually if you are going after a very popular, or well know brand and color. But there can be problems even if the part numbers match, as the batch number might be different and the colors of the material may be slightly varied. If you are not too picky then this will work fine for your purposes. If you are getting ready to sell your home, then keep looking, as a discerning buyer will always notice the smallest details like this.

If you are looking to make runners that match through out the house, you can save a lot of money by purchasing one of these left over carpets, and have a company cut and bind the runner pieces to your specifications. This could save two or three hundred dollars if the service company does over charge for its labor. If there is any left over, have them make some small fitted pieces for the foyer, and the back door as well.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Noises – Whining, Humming, Roaring

Jeep Grand Cherokees are prone to having several common mechanical problems. The problem that we cover today is with noisy differentials (rear ends). While it is acceptable for Jeep differentials to make some noise, it’s not good to ignore noises that are more than moderate or if the noise is noticeably getting louder. Usually rear end whining noises from Jeeps are rated on a scale from 1-10, anything under a 5 is acceptable and would not merit a repair. If a roaring noise is heard this is another matter, roaring noises should be looked into right away. I’ve rebuilt hundreds of rear ends and out of those, approximately 80% of them have been in Jeeps. Also the Jeeps I’ve worked on were not driven off road or abused in any way that I could see. They were mainly driven as a regular family car would be, so this leads me to conclude that this is just a common problem due to design.

Roaring noises, are one of the most common sounds a Jeep Grand Cherokee makes from the rear end. As I mentioned before, if roaring noises are heard this should be addressed as soon as possible. Typically around 45 MPH is when sounds will start coming from the rear end. If roaring is heard at all speeds or at parking lot speeds, the problem has progressed. Roaring noises are from worn and pitted bearings. Carrier bearings (which are the side bearings) are the most common bearings to fail. Next are the pinion bearings, especially if a pinion seal has been replaced at some point and the bearing preload was excessive. This means the pinion nut was tightened too much. Over-tightening the pinion nut can cause an excessive load on the pinion bearings and can wear the bearings in a short period of time. If the bearing replacement is postponed too long, metal can travel through the differential oil and damage other moving parts in the differential. This can cause accelerated wear of the ring and pinion gears. So if they are caught early enough, the bearings can be replaced without replacing the ring and pinion gears.

Ring and Pinion gears that are worn excessively make a whining or humming noise, sometimes on acceleration and sometimes on deceleration. And they are more expensive to replace than just the bearings. The ring and pinion gears can make a whining noise without a roaring noise being present from the bearings. But when replacing the ring and pinion gears the other bearings, including two pinion bearings and carrier bearings are recommended to be replaced also. The axle bearings should be inspected but they are the farthest away from the differential gears and bearings, so they most likely will be OK especially on lower mileage vehicles.

Used rear ends in my opinion should be avoided for Jeeps. The reason is because this is such a common problem, that the chances of getting a good one from a salvage yard is slim.

Noises in the parking lot only could just be a limited slip clutch (posi-traction) noise. In this case try putting an additive designed for the clutches. Ask for limited slip friction modifier or posi additive. Driving the vehicle some will allow the modifier to soak into the clutches and hopefully prevent them from grabbing.

7 Signs That Indicate It's Bad Timing for a Relationship

Connecting with someone special can be a beautiful experience. However, both individuals must be able to commit and not let outside obstacles get in the way of their budding romance. Like everything, love can come at the wrong time regardless of how strong two people's feeling are for each other. No number of marriage blogs will prepare you for the ultimate decision if you or your prospect significant other has something holding them back. If you think you've found the right person at a not-so-right time, take a look at some of the signs that'll give you clarity.

7 Indications of Bad Relationship Timing

1. Financial setback

One of the main reasons why romantic partners never get off the ground is because of money, or lack thereof. One or both individuals may be between jobs, unhappy at their current jobs, have major debt or bad credit, and / or struggling to make ends meet. Although both parties may have good intentions, there's an ever a huge strain put on the relationship, particularly when one person feels like he / she is contributing more than the other. Unfortunately, it may be time to call it quits if you can not find a way to work around the issue.

2. One or both of you are still getting over a break-up

Another popular signal of bad timing is if someone is carrying baggage from a previous sour relationship. As much as a person may like you, if he / she is not completely over his / her ex, your bond could backfire. The affected individual may compare you to the old partner even when they do not mean to, which can be annoying and hurtful. It's best to let them heal so you do not risk becoming a rebound.

3. Long distance

Long distance relationships rarely due last because there's always temptation and not enough time to spend together. Plus, money becomes an issue when it comes to always having to make travel arrangements. Some people find it easier to just part ways rather than holding onto something that can be too much pressure.

4. Family issues

Unfortunately, family dysfunction can stop a relationship from budding as well. A relative's death, sibling dramas, or parents' overprotectiveness can cause a bitter end.

5. Work-related claims

No one likes to feel neglected. Sometimes potential partners may not be able to avoid putting in long hours at their job, especially if they're next in line for a promotion or some other form of career advancement. If this is the case, you should not try to compete for the other person's time. Wish him / her well and leave the relationship if you're not able to handle playing second place for awhile.

6. Health-related concerns

Failing health can also be detrimental. Although you may want to be there for someone you have feelings for during their illness, having a regular relationship is probably not a good idea since their focus should be on a full recovery.

7. Traumatic experience

If a person has just gone through some kind of traumatic experience, such as a car accident or violent encounter, it's a good idea not to pressure them into entering a relationship. He / she needs to concentrate on a psychological healing by seeking help from a professional with a counseling degree before they can pursue a courtship.
