India stands second in the world, in the number of active mobile phones users. The number of people who own and use cell phones continues to grow. 1 billion Smartphone users are expected to sell in the coming year, doubling that of the number of PCs. With over 10 billion mobile Internet devices expected to be in use by 2016 which is 1.4 device per person on the planet. According to some recent research Moms spend 53 percent of their app-usage time playing games with Android phones. On iPads, that's 48 percent of their app time, and on iPhones, 31 percent. "Moms are gamers, too." So, you can certainly experience its explosive growth.

But it is not as green as it appears. Starting and establishing a mobile app development business is a hard nut to crack. Few challenges faced by start-up companies are:

  • Resource restraint: It's not that corporations do not have access to in-house programming talent-they usually do. However, most of that talent is going to have experience on the Windows side; not necessarily on popular mobile platforms like Android and iOS. Windows can and should be a part of any mobile platform discussions. However, it's only a part and there's got to be work done on Android and iOS. But, let's be honest. If you're a hotshot 27-year old mobile programmer, are you going to look for work inside a corporation's in-house app development team? Or are you going to try and join one of the seemingly never-ending supplies of mobile startups who seem certain they can make millions with the latest hot app?
  • Security: Every mobile device manufacturer understands the importance of security, and offers accommodations for it. Sometimes different mobile platforms provide varying degrees of support for securing data stored on the device. At the same time, not every mobile application needs the same level of security, and users dislike multiple login to access data on the device itself or back-end data. However, the responsibility for protecting data falls squarely on the application developers' shoulders, so they must incorporate encryption into the application down to the file system level
  • Gathering & Implementation of Ideas: When you start a new business the very first point that matters is objective evaluation. Gathering all ideas. And not just falling in love with those ideas. Doing rigorous study and investigation also matters. Referring experts and then taking a decision. According to a popular business trainer "When you choose to open a business, your chances at success-and satisfaction-are greater if you love the work you do".
  • What is their business model? Do they sell their own apps?
  • Finance: Most people assume that this is an easy ride especially for someone whose father is already a billionaire, whereas, whether it's an investor or your own father he wants to see great projections before he agree to invest in your new business. Whatever kind of business you're setting up – from a one-person operation based at home, to a high-tech manufacturing plant – you need to be clear about how much money you're going to need and where you're going to get it.

Regardless of your challenges, that you'll be facing. There are a few important qualities that may lead you to success:

  • Platform appropriate – Your app should be optimized for a mobile user. Make sure your app is compatible and functional for all brands and devices.
  • User Friendly – Your app needs to look amazing. Even the best app idea could falter if it is not packaged in a fully branded, colorful enticing way. Your app needs to be easy to install, easy to access, and easy to use. Sketch out how you think you'd like your app to work and spend time making it simpler.
  • Memorable & shareable – Your user should be left with a major impression. Use any design, wording, and interface techniques you can to make sure your user never forget their experience. The most successful mobile apps are the ones that are easily shareable. Your app needs to have a feature that rewards users for sharing it with other users.
  • Spontaneous – Any app needs to be accessible for short bursts of user activity. If your app only is good for long, drawn-out sessions of use, it probably will not succeed.
  • Cheap – It's a no-brainer. The cheaper something is, the more users are likely to download it. Try a free version coupled with a full version.
  • Demographic targeted – Know your audience. Not everyone in the world will want your app, so focus on the users who will.
  • Fun – Possibly the most important quality in any app is its level of enjoyment ability. Take the time to entertain your users in addition to whatever your app's primary function is.

Pro Tools Optimization Guide For Audio Recording

Optimizing your Pro Tools system is yet another important part of having smooth and stable recording / mixing / mastering sessions and each particular process requires different configurations.

Optimizing for recording: When recording audio, latency is a big issue, you want the least latency possible so that there is no lag between the source and what you're capturing, latency issues can cause artifacts in the recording that are not very pretty !

(Assuming you're already inside PTD / LE) Go to the "System" Menu and select "Playback Engine." Here, you will see various options, the first one being H / W Buffer Size. This means: "Hardware Buffer size" which refers to the timing of latency between the hardware and the software. You will notice there are quite a few options in the dropdown menu:

  • 64
  • 128
  • 256
  • 512
  • 1024
  • 2048

As I said, you want the lowest option your system can perform, if your system can utilize 64 ms latency, fantastic, if not, do not stress yourself too much. If you can keep your buffer size between 64 and 256, you're doing well. If you're uncomfortable playing with these settings for now, that's fine! Those of you who fall into this category, just keep it at 512 samples.

The next option that you will see is: "Host Processors" This indicates to how many processors Pro Tools will use to allocate threads to. If you have a quad core CPU, you will be using four cores, if you have hyperthreading enabled in your BIOS settings, you will see 8 in this menu, if you have 8 physical cores (dual CPU) you will see 8 and if you 're using hyperthreading with 8 physical cores, you will see 16! If you're using 8 physical cores though, you will not have any need to enable hyperthreading. Basically, for this particular option, keep it as high as you can, the manual will say to use one less core, but I disagree.

The final setting under the "Settings" category is CPU usage limit, what this is, is basically a brickwall limiter for your CPU that works off of a percentage. When your system reaches a specified usage amount due to RTAS plug ins and Audiosuite rendering, etc, once it reaches the peak, it will go no further than that. A setting of 85% or 90% is acceptable here.

The next section you will see refer to the DAE playback buffer, which deals with disk latency and plugins / audio streaming. This is a very important setting for recording and mixing. Different from the H / W buffer in that this setting does not focus on the CPU or Digidesign hardware, but on your hard drive. You will see "size" and in the dropdown menu you will see levels 1-4, keep this on level 1 and if your system can handle it, put it on 0! For Cache size, leave this on normal without your system is really having a hard time, then switch it to large. (If you followed my recording PC guide, you will be just fine leaving this on normal!)

Lastly, you will see an option with a tick box that says: "ignore errors during playback / record" (may cause clicks and pops). This setting is debatable, if there is something wrong and you keep getting errors when mixing about the DAE engine and you just can not get it to go away, tick this box (especially with the 8.0.3 update) I hear no clicks or pops with or without it. I have not had this particular option enabled when tracking so I can not speak for this option in such an instance, only with mixing.

Try to keep it unchecked if possible, if you notice nothing wrong with tracking or mixing, leave it on, it is most likely doing no harm.

How to Fix FIFA 14 Crashes?

Check Hardware Requirements

Update Origin

Origin needs to be updated as follows:

  1. Launch Origin user interface.
  2. Right click the game entry, choose “Check for update”.

Provide Administrative Rights to Origin File

The origin file could be facing compatibility problems with the operating system. Windows provides a way to deal with compatibility problems.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Press F3 key to locate Search.
  3. Type “Origin.exe” in the Search box.
  4. Press ENTER.
  5. Right click the file from the Search Results, select Properties.
  6. Click Compatibility tab, check-up “Run this program in compatibility mode for” checkbox and choose an earlier Windows version.
  7. Click OK.

Change FifaSetup_Default.ini Settings

This file contains default configurations. In this file you’ll find two strings related to your computer’s screen resolution. Check if the screen resolution mentioned in the file matches with your current screen resolution. If it doesn’t, make appropriate modifications in the file.

  1. Open My Computer, press F3 and search for “fifasetup_default.ini” file.
  2. Right click the file in the search results and open it with Notepad.
  3. Click Edit | Find, search for “RESOLUTIONWIDTH” and “RESOLUTIONHEIGHT”:
  4. Replace existing values with appropriate width and height.
  5. Click File | Save and then exit.

Resolve Data Execution Prevention Conflicts

Sometimes DEP conflicts with your game. It prevents the smooth running of the executable file. Add the game file to the list of DEP Excluded Items as follows:

  1. Right click My Computer, select Properties.
  2. Click Advanced System Settings in the left hand side panel.
  3. A new dialog opens with Advanced tab opened.
  4. Click the Settings button under Performance frame.
  5. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, the last one.
  6. Choose “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”, click Add and locate the following EXE files:

Re-register Game Components

Game components such as DLL files and server settings need to be re-registered. This will fix FIFA 14 crashes.

1. Click Start, type “Command Prompt” in the Search Box.

3. Right click it, select Run as administrator.

4. Type following commands one by one. Press ENTER after each command ends.

Reset Folder Permissions

There is a possibility that the FIFA 14 folder may not have enough administrative permissions. When this is the case, you will provide read/ write permissions to the folder and all of its contents (sub folders, files).

  1. Open C:Program Files (x86).
  2. Right click FIFA14, select Properties.
  3. Click Sharing | Advanced Sharing | Permissions.
  4. Check-up “Full Control” and click OK.

Delete User Preferences

The user preferences are stored in a separate folder called as “FIFA 14” which is located in the My Documents folder. Due to corruption of these files, you are experiencing FIFA 14 crashes.

  1. Open My Documents.
  2. Delete the folder “FIFA 14” to the Recycle Bin.

Note: DO NOT delete it permanently.Just in case the crashes are still occurring, we can easily restore it.

Used Brick – Blessing or Curse?

Do you have 'used brick' on your home or business? If so then you probably know by now, that they can be a blessing and a curse as well. How is that … you may wonder? Well used brick certainly are a beautiful veneer for colonial or traditional applications however, if they are not maintained properly … watch out!

You could find yourself deep into the thousands in repair cost that could have been avoided, if you had only followed these simple tips to used brick maintenance.

What are used brick? Used bricks are salvaged from old building when the building are torn down or demolished. They became widely available in the '70s when many older downtown buildings across the country were being raised. They were in abundance and a source of cheap building materials for the builders.

They can vary broadly is size and shape and are usually red, orange, brown and a pink-salmon color. They have rounded corners from the demolition process, soft and sometimes have chips in the face. Most were salvaged from the back-up portion or interior walls of old masonry buildings and have various stains ranged from black soot, whitewash to paint. It is one of the few bricks though, that blend perfectly with colonial architecture. Unfortunately architecture aside, they were used extensively on all types of buildings because they were cheap and easy to find

How do I know if I have used brick on my home or business? Used brick have a specific character of being soft and when you look at a used brick building from the street it has an old appearance. If you take a screwdriver and scrape it along the surface of a used brick, you will likely gouge the surface of the brick easily.

A new brick wall on the other hand would be too hard, if not impossible to gouge and are more regular and rectangular in shape. If you looked at a new brick building from the street it would have a more uniform appearance and look 'newer'.

How do I look for damage in used brick? Fortunately used brick tend to deteriorate as individual units unlike new brick, which tend to deteriorate in sections. As you walk around your building look closely for bricks that have a chalky, orange color to them. These bricks are the first to deteriorate in a used brick wall and for some reason will be very noticeable.

As you look closer at the wall you may also find bricks that are 'powdering' which means that they turn to powder as they deteriorate. Regardless of how they manifest, you should remove and replace all the damaged used bricks that you find. While inspecting the individual bricks for damage also look for cracks and loose or missing mortar. Fill in any holes that you find and repair any cracks. This will go a long way to preventing excess water from entering the wall.

After you have completed the repairs you are now ready for your final and most important preventive maintenance chore.

Seal your bricks! There is nothing more valuable to your used brick building than a saturation application of high quality masonry sealer. I can not be more enthusiastic about the protection of used bricks with sealer. Most used brick are probably over 100 years old at this point and need protection.

As you watch that liquid gold being sucked into your brickwork by the gallons, remember that it will protect the used brick and save you ongoing maintenance and repair cost over the long haul. It is the cheapest insurance that you can buy against used brick deterioration.

Ferrari Cars and Some of Their Famous Owners, A Brief Guide

Ferrari luxury sports cars have always had a special affinity with the association of not only the racing world and upper echelons of the Formula One Grand Prix, but also a popular choice for the rich and famous.

A Ferrari parked outside an expensive boutique or a café in Monaco would not ever "look out of place", would it? This is probably due to the fact that Ferrari sports cars have always had a reassuringly rather large price tag to go with their image of wealth for its owner.

With this in mind, the cars that belong to celebrities, Hollywood actors and famous people have always attracted even more attention than their less famously owned counter parts. So when some of these famously owned cars end up at a classic car auction or are announced that they will be sold, a media frenzy starts and so does a bidding war for the top price.

In a recent classic car auction at the Silverstone, a rare 2003 "Ferrari 575 Maranello" with only 10,000 miles on the odometer was historically sold for £ 66,000 and was purchased by an unknown private buyer. What was unique about this car was its provenance from its famous previous owners.

The fact this Ferrari was not just rare, but its previous owners included; the legendary guitar hero "Eric Clapton" and the BBC Radio and TV presenter Chris Evans, who are both huge Ferrari fans in their own right.

Chris Evans has been in and out of the motoring world press for the last few years, with his growing collection of Ferrari's, which now includes seven in the line-up. But his latest acquisition is the one that's got everyone talking. It's a very rare 1960 Ferrari 250 California Spyder, that cost over £ 5 million at auction. What makes this classic car even more special is that its only number 13 of only 56 cars ever produced this model, but it was actually owned by the late (great) film actor James Coburn, who was a massive Ferrari fan.

James Coburn got his love of cars from his father and was reputed to have turned the automative-fanatic actor Steve McQueen onto Ferrari sports cars back in the early sixties.

Other celebrities and star's who share a love for Ferrari sports cars are most notably Jay Kay from the band Jamiroquai who has had a number of Ferrari's including; a Ferrari F40, a 360 Spider, Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari 456GT. Veteran rock singer Rod Stewart also owns a Ferrari F40, a 360 Spider and now new Murcielago.

Star of film and TV, Joanna Lumley has a classic Ferrari 328 GTS Targa, where as lead guitarist of the Who rock band also has a passion for Ferrari's, as Pete Townshend currently owns a Ferrari 550 Maranello.

Lumber Dimensions – What You See is Not What You Get (Exactly)

It seems like buying lumber should be one of the easier steps in building a project. But if you're not familiar with lumber dimensions, you'll soon discover that what you see is not exactly what you get. Most boards measure somewhat smaller than the dimensions posted on the shelf. To understand what's happening here, we first need to make an important distinction between lumber dimensions for softwood, and lumber dimensions for hardwood.

Softwood Lumber Dimensions

Most of the lumber you see at home improvement centers is made of softwood – like pine, spruce, and fir. Softwood is marked and sold in "nominal" dimensions – a somewhat misleading number that is larger than the actual size of the board. The nominal size describes the size of the board when it first arrived at the lumber mill. However, before being shipped out, both the width and the thickness is shaved off by as much as 3/4 of an inch. Here are some of the more common lumber dimensions for softwood:

Lumber Dimensions – 1x Nominal

These boards lose 1/4 inch in thickness and 1/2 inch in width before leaving the mill. That means a 1 x 4 board is actually 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches.

Lumber Dimensions – 2x Nominal

These boards lose 1/2 inch in thickness and 1/2 inch in width before leaving the mill. That means a 2 x 4 board is actually 1-1 / 2 inches by 3-1 / 2 inches. You'll find a couple of variations from this basic formula across different sizes of softwood, so be sure to check a lumber dimensions chart for the complete list of board sizes.

Buying Hardwood

Hardwood follows a completely different set of rules for determining the size of a board. Unlike pine and spruce, hardwood is often sold in random widths, thicknesses, and lengths. Why? Hardwood is much too valuable to chop up into uniform pieces. This creates too much waste. Instead, lumber mills use as much of the hardwood tree as possible, which produces boards in a variety of shapes and sizes. Since no two hardwood boards are exactly the same, prices are based on a unit of measurement called "board feet" – a more accurate way of estimating how much wood is in a particular board.

The basic formula for estimating board feet is to multiply Thickness x Width x Length – and then divide that number by 144 (which gives you the total board feet). Of course, buying rough hardwood lumber in this fashion leaves plenty of work for you in the shop – like ripping, crosscutting, and planning all the boards before you even start the project. Most woodworkers prefer this approach, though. It lets them decide exactly where on the board they want to cut the individual project pieces, paying special attention to the location of knots, interesting grain patterns, and colors.

Green Homes – How Much Insulation is Enough?

New government programs encourage people to make their home more energy efficient and green. Insulation is an important part of an energy efficient home, but more insulation is not always better. Adding insulation and installing insulation in previously uninsulated spaces may be a waste of money and can actually harm your home.

Additional insulation reaches a point of diminishing returns. Before the point of diminishing returns, every dollar spent increasing insulation yields at least a one dollar reduction in energy costs over a reasonable time period. After the point of diminishing returns, every dollar spent yields less than one dollar energy cost reduction over the same time period. An investment in additional insulation does not make financial and energy efficiency sense after the point of diminishing returns.

One place to begin looking for the point of diminishing returns is The International Residential Code (IRC) 2009. The IRC contains minimum insulation requirements for new homes. The IRC required insulation is not at the point of diminishing returns, but it is close. For example, IRC minimum attic insulation in warm climates is R-30. Increasing to R-38 approaches the point of diminishing returns. Exceeding R-38 may pass beyond the point of diminishing returns and may not significantly improve energy efficiency in warm climates.

We have simplified the eight IRC climate zones to three zones because the attic and crawl space insulation requirements are similar for some zones. Where insulation requirements in our zones differ from the IRC requirements, we use the higher requirement. Contact your local building official to determine the insulation requirements in your area.

Our zone one covers the southern one third of the country and includes states such as South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, Hawaii and most of Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, and California. Our zone two covers the middle one third of the country and includes states such as Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, and parts of Michigan, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Our zone three covers the northern one third of the country and Alaska.

Minimum attic insulation in our zone one is R-30. Minimum insulation in the floor over a ventilated crawl space is R-19. Minimum attic insulation in our zone two is R-38. Minimum insulation in the floor over a ventilated crawl space is R-30. Minimum attic insulation in our zone three is R-49. Minimum insulation in the floor over a ventilated crawl space is R-30. If the floor framing over a crawl space will not allow for full depth R-30 insulation, then R-19 is acceptable in our zones two and three.

Insulating a ventilated crawl space is more complicated than simply placing insulation between floor joists. This is particularly true in warm and humid climates where insulating floor joists can permit moisture condensation that can damage wood and encourage mold growth. The IRC now allows unventilated and insulated crawl spaces. You should do more research on crawl space insulation and crawl space moisture problems before insulating a crawl space.

More insulation is usually better for improving a home’s energy efficiency, up to a certain point. After the point of diminishing returns, investment in other energy efficiency techniques may yield better returns. In new construction these other techniques include passive solar design, air tight construction, high efficiency windows, and attic radiant barriers. In existing homes these other techniques include sealing gaps between the home’s interior and exterior and attic radiant barriers.

Options For Pet Proof Carpeting

The task of choosing new carpet is a bit confusing with the numerous types on the market, and when animals are a part of the family it becomes even more perplexing for a number of reasons. Animals can be rough on a home, and particularly the carpet when they rough house. Their nails often catch on the fibers and cause a great deal of destruction. Cats occasionally cough up hairballs and then leave behind spots that are hard to remove. When shopping for carpeting, it is good to select those options that are stain proof and long lasting. The following information will help you choose pet-proof carpet that will stand up to roughhousing, long nails, and all types of stains pets leave behind. It is alike possible to obtain pet proof carpeting that will last for many years to come.

Selections that are Resistant to Stains and Pet-Proof. When shopping for new carpet it is important to choose a variety that is pet-proof and resistant to all types of stains. Carpet repairs can be very expensive, and Berber should be avoided at all costs when looking for pet-proof carpeting. Many pet proof varieties are available that will not snag or become seriously destroyed.

Color Selections. Taking into account the spots and stains that cats and dogs can and do leave behind, avoid light-colored carpeting when looking for a pet-proof alternative. If your pets have lighter colored fur, you should avoid dark carpet as it will better show shedded fur. Opt for mid-range colors, and considering selecting a variety that includes more than one color. When selecting carpeting, keep in mind that solid colored carpets are more apt to show stains while variegated or mottled varieties are not.

Tightly Woven Low Pile Options. The best choice when purchasing animal proof carpet is those carpets that feature short pile and have tightly woven fibers. Commercial grade carpets typically used in apartments and hotels are pet-proof and people-proof. Constructed to withstand use and wear and stain-resistant, these are the most optimal selection.

Visit your local carpet retailer, and ask to see samples of commercial grade low-pile stain-resistant varieties. This particular style may not be your initial choice, but Berber, which is nowhere near as favorited as it used to be, and Frieze, which is regarded as the new shag carpet are not pet-resistant or an ideal choice. With appropriate care, the investment that you make in your pet-proof carpet will pay off with carpeting that lasts for many years.

A Comparison Between uPVC Windows and Timber Frame Windows

uPVC windows, vinyl siding or rigid vinyl windows as they are often called around the world are made from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride. Whereas timber frame windows are obviously made of wood. Both window types have their drawbacks and advantages.

Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride is a plastic. And it is this fact that is at the heart of the problems with uPVC windows. Plastics are notoriously hard and expensive to recycle or dispose of safely. In many countries unwanted plastic just ends up in landfill sites. Vinyl windows are made from PVC. The US Environmental Protection agency classes the dioxins that are given off in the production of PVC as carcinogens. Furthermore, if vinyl windows are burnt they give off carcinogenic dioxins. This is worried news if you consider the possibility of house fires and also the reality that many fires occur in landfill sites where the majority of unwanted uPVC ends up.

In contrast timber frame windows are much easier to dispose of at the end of their life. The wood can be recycled, burnt to make energy or allowed to biodegrade. The only environmental problem with timber frame windows is that timber is a precious commodity and deforestation is a very real threat to the future health of the planet.

Putting aside the environmental issues surrounding uPVC windows and timber frame windows, it is clear that in other respects vinyl windows are better. Timber frame windows are subject to continuous damage by the extremes of weather. Too much rain will make the wood rot. Too much humidity will make the wood swell and too little moisture will make the wood shrink and crack. It is necessary to constantly be repairing timber frame windows to ensure they last.

Whereas, uPVC windows are imperfect to the changing conditions of the weather: they will last for over 25 years with minimal maintenance required.

Timber frame windows are bad insulators. They let out a lot of heat in the winter and allow in a lot of heat in the summer. In comparison uPVC is a good insulator. Installing uPVC window frames with double glazing will significantly reduce your heating and cooling bills.

Wooden frame windows provide a soft target for house breakers. It takes only a matter of seconds to open a timber frame with a pry bar. Compare this with uPVC windows which provide no place for a pry bar to gain purchase and are very difficult to force open. Furthermore double glazing is not easy to smash through. We have seen a lot over the past 12 years with portable refrigerated trailers. As the name implies there really are two key elements involved here, the refrigeration and the trailer. We have seen some folks get part of it right while most fail at both aspects when designing and building a small refrigerated trailers.

Let's start with the trailer. This is the foundation of everything we do. The regular cargo- enclosed trailer industry has changed over the years so much and they are cutting out the strength and durability we require for refrigerated trailers. It is important not to just get a trailer off the lot and try this at home like so many we see out there today.

Quality built refrigerated trailers should have:

1. Single Piece Aluminum roof
2. 16 "OC steel tube walls
3. Steel tube roof
4. Steel tube framed rear doors (not plywood w / aluminum skin)
5. Triple tube tongue
6. LED lights
7. Sub floor for superior insulation with aluminum underbelly
8. Load D or greater tires for better stability
9. No wood framing or wood walls / ceiling (lighter & stronger with no mold or mildew issues)
10. Reinforced front nose for refrigeration unit
11. Extended tongue with mounts for generator

We have even seen people taking walk in coolers and putting them on a flat bed trailer. Be careful as many of these structures are not DOT approved and you can be fined or even worse injure someone. Use common sense, walk in coolers are great for sitting inside or outside a building but they are not designed for the rigors of the road going up and down and side to side, they offer no structural support.

The refrigeration is just as important and you definitely want to get this part right. The ideal solution for businesses is a unit that can be used as either a cooler or a freezer. Please make sure that even if you are purchasing a cooler that the refrigeration system has a defrost capability and preferably hot gas defrost. I mention this because so many folks find out the hard way that if you want your trailer to stay at 35 degrees then your evaporator has to be 12- 15 degrees cooler than that to maintain your temperature. Well it may take 12 hours or 24 hours but ever you are going to get an ice build up on your coil and you will need a way to defrost it or else lose your product.

Standard refrigeration units that have hot gas defrost are the most effective and fast way to defrost a system. The use of standard refrigeration will save you a bundle in repair and maintenance cost alone. We also recommend modifying your refrigeration system for transportation and do not use copper to connect the evaporator coil to condenser coil. Copper is a soft metal and will break easily. Hopefully these tips serve you well in your search for refrigerated trailers to purchase or rent.

Cobra Golf SL Putters

Cobra Golf is predominantly known for its drivers and wood clubs, but they have an innovative line of putters as well. The line is not extensive and does not include classic putter styles, but the basics of high MOI (moment of inertia), and a CG (center of gravity) that is low and well back of the putter face are clearly major design goals. This high MOI produces forgiveness on putts not hit exactly on the sweet spot, and the low and back CG means that the ball will skid less and get rolling quicker. There are three basic putter head designs in the Cobra SL Series, and these come in several varieties, including putters with heel and center shaft attachments, ladies models, and putters for left handed golfers as well.

There are a number of common threads in the Cobra SL series of putters. All are mallet style designs with a forged steel weight bar that runs completely around the back of the putters. This is primarily how the high MOI is achieved. Weight has also been removed from the tops of the clubs and a light weight urethane material is used there. This urethane substance has the added effect of dampening some vibrations and giving the golfer a more sensitive feel at impact. The putter faces are all made of aluminum, and the face contains a milled face pattern which, along with the CG that is low and back, causes the ball to skid less and get rolling faster along its intended line. The alignment aids are very prominent on all the models, and a yellow dashed sight line, called a fiber optic sight line, is used each of the clubs as well.

The Optica SL-01 model has a traditional mallet putter look, but this is elongated by the weight bar which runs completely around the back and is some distance away. A rather thin solid bar runs from the back of the putter face, through the mallet section and connects to the metal weight bar. On top of this is the yellow dashed fiber optic sight line. There is also a channel on the top of the putter which is about an inch or more in width, and this is also part of the alignment system. The SL-01 is a heel shafted putter, whereas the SL-02 is exactly the same as the SL-01 but is a center shafted club.

The Optica SL-03 has all of the same basic technology features and materials described above but has a different head shape. Still a mallet looking putter because of the weight bar running around the entire back of the putter head, the SL-03 has a modified trapezoid shape behind the putter face. The diagonal lines of the trapezoid curve inward in an arc, and so there is empty space between there and the metal weight bar. The alignment aid is again very prominent and is about as wide as the diameter of a golf ball, and it includes two of the yellow dashed alignment lines. The SL-04 has the same exact design as the SL-03, but the latter is a heel shafted putter whereas the SL-04 is a center shafted club.

The Optica SL-05 is once again a mallet style putter formed by the semicircular weight bar around the back. The putter face and the weight bar are connected by a straight bar of material that is about an inch or more in width. This bar also serves as part of the alignment system, and on top of it are 3 yellow dashed sight lines. As with the other odd numbered models, the SL-05 is a heel shafted putter, and the SL-06 in turn is the same design except it is a center shafted club.

There are ladies models for the SL-01 and SL-03, and all the models come in both right and left handed versions. There are some choices in putter length which can be either 33, 34, or 35 inches, although all three lengths are not available for every model. For example, for lefties, only the 35 inch length is available on both the SL-01 and SL-03 models.

The Cobra Golf SL Putters are attractive and modern looking, and they appear to be well designed for functionality as well. Several PGA Tour players use these putters, so you know they perform well or the pros would use something else, as there are hundreds of models to choose from, and these players can use any clubs they like.

Managing the Risks of RG22 Foam

The risk of using resin generated (RG) foam to fill redundant tanks on forecourts lies mainly in the assumption that it is risk free.

Resin generated foam, in its many forms – RG22, RG8 and RG30 – is now widely used on fuel sites everywhere. RG30 is used to encase fuel tanks for extra safety and contamination protection. RG8 is used for filling de-gassed tanks on a very temporary basis, as it is claimed that it can be completely broken down with water. RG22 is the most prevalent, as it is widely used for the ‘permanent’ filling of tanks.

RG22 was first developed at a time when the solid fill material of choice was a 20:1 sand/cement slurry. To fill every part of the tank successfully with this, contractors needed to open the top of the tank, pour in the slurry and agitate it; otherwise it would settle as a cone with space all around. Sometimes part of the forecourt had to be dug up if the manhole was in the wrong position.

The advantages of RG22 were that it was claimed to be safe, environmentally friendly and could be pumped in through an exiting pipe or a flange on the manhole lid. This made it a big favourite with petroleum officers and oil companies, some of which began to insist on its use.

It was also cheaper than slurry and much lighter, which meant that the eventual excavation of the tank was claimed to be easier and less expensive.

The introduction of foamed concrete has eroded some of these advantages, as it is much lighter than its predecessor and has similar flowing properties. This means that, for most fuel site uses, there is now a viable alternative to RG22 that meets the requirements of oil companies and petroleum officers.

The main reason that we need an alternative to RG foam is that it contains formaldehyde – a probable human carcinogen. In 2002, formaldehyde was placed on the US Report on Carcinogens 11th edition, compiled by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service and the National Toxicology Program; something that holds only moral power in the UK and EU.

In Canada Urea-formaldehyde foam, which also uses formaldehyde as a curing aid, was used to insulate homes, particularly timber framed houses, but this has now been banned by the Canadian government after occupants complained of runny noses and sore eyes.

Because formaldehyde is used as a curing agent, while R22 needs to be handled with care at all times, the highest health risk does not occur when the foam is pumped into tanks in its liquid state, but rather when the so called ‘permanently’ filled tanks have to be excavated and removed, to allow a site to be decommissioned and used for some other purpose.

The concerns are two-fold: handling the foam itself and exposure to the formaldehyde gas that is given off when the tanks are excavated and cut up for disposal.

Because of its alleged properties, we were as interested in using RG22 as anyone else when it first came out. Our doubts began when we started excavating tanks that had been filled with the foam and discovered how difficult and expensive it was to dispose of.

We discovered that RG22 can shrink, letting air get back into the tank, which reduces the safety effects of RG22 and speeds up corrosion. We later also discovered that it gave formaldehyde gas a place to gather.

We have excavated tanks less than three months after they have been filled with RG22 and the foam had already shrunk considerably. On the other hand, we have excavated tanks that were filled with RG22 two years previously and found that some of the foam was still in a liquid state.

When our people opened the tanks they found the fumes were often overpowering and anyone who was unfortunate enough to touch the stuff received an unpleasant and uncomfortable skin rash as a reward. All our people now use an all-over bodysuit and breathing apparatus when dealing with RG22.”

The lightness of the foam was supposed to make excavation easier, allowing the tank containing the foam to be lifted straight from the ground and onto the back of a lorry. Unfortunately we discovered that there are only one or two disposal sites that will accept tanks with RG22 still inside. Even then, they will only accept small tanks, and then only when they can be placed in a deep part of the landfill site.

We will only attempt the all-in-one approach when our client insists, as we prefer the more environmentally friendly approach of sending the metal of the tank for recycling. This means that once it has been removed from the ground, the excavated tank has to be cut away, with the metal taken to one site and the RG22 to another – usually a hazardous waste site.

We are not the only ones to have concerns, another company in our sector told us: “RG foam is fine if the tank was never going to be opened again; the problem is that, these days, eventually, many tanks will need to be removed, if the site is to be sold on for development.

“My concern is, when we cut the tanks open there is a very pungent smell of formaldehyde and often an irritated feeling in the throat and eyes.

“We now use a different technique where we try to use heavy machinery to open the tanks up, keeping personnel away from the excavation.

“It would appear that the problem lies in the fact that during the curing the foam emits a fair amount of formaldehyde gas, which is trapped in the tank, to be released only when it is cut open.

“Our workforce also initially noticed some irritation through exposure to the foam and, indeed, the manufacturers’ data sheet says it is a ‘light irritant’.”

This company believes the main problem is that, as well as being an irritant, the material is light and friable, so, if precautions are not taken, it can get under clothing or even be breathed in.

“However,” says the company, “this part of the problem can be dealt with if contractors are properly forewarned. Like any other risk, they can deal with it, if they know exactly what they are facing, by elimination, in the first instance and, where not possible, control techniques such as wearing protective clothing, gloves masks, eye protection etc.

“A bigger problem is that fuel sites undergoing decommissioning are normally bounded by roads and pavements, often in built up areas, so there is a danger that the light friable foam can easily be blown off the site. These days we don’t remove these foams on a day when there is any wind at all.

“However, as I said, the problems associated with the foam itself can be dealt with using some simple precautions, our real concern is the formaldehyde gas that is given off when the tanks are cut into, as they must be when a site is decommissioned.”

Experience has shown us that air pockets occur, where the gas tends to concentrate, leading to a burst of gas being released when these pockets are breached.

Proximity is the real problem. Once formaldehyde gas is vented to atmosphere it will disburse to a harmless level, but if you are close to the tank when it is cut it is more worrying.

Environmental and personal monitoring was carried out by a company in our sector, looking at the level of concentration of formaldehyde gas on fuel sites being decommissioned when tanks are cut open.

In one of these tests, formaldehyde sensors were placed at four strategic points on the site. Three produced results of under the recommended level of two parts per million, but the nearest sensor, located 3m from the tank, registered 2.07 parts per million, which exceeds the UK workplace exposure limits (WEL) of 2.0 parts per million, currently listed in HSE publication EH40/2005 Workplace Exposure Limits.

This indicates that steps need to be taken to protect anyone going within that distance.

We also believe that the two parts per million limit itself needs examination, as there is, in my opinion, no real evidence for this level, one way or the other. Much more research is needed.

The message is to be aware of the risks and take the right precautions.

The main problem is the respiratory system and the eyes, so we use a helmet, with a visor and a power assisted respirator.

Their message to petroleum officers and oil companies is to not get seduced by the alleged advantages of RG foam, to look at where it is appropriate to use it.

RG foams have their place in the mix, they should not be seen as the first resort.

It may be slightly cheaper to use RG22 to fill the tanks in the first place, but any savings are outweighed by the extra disposal costs and precautions that have to be put in place.

Hierarchy of dealing with hazards.

1. Eliminate

If the job is hazardous, does it really need doing?

2. Substitute

If the job is really necessary, then can the hazardous material be substituted with something more benign, such as slurry, foamed concrete or polyurethane, which is now being sold as a substitute in the US, but not here yet.

3. Change working methods

Using more machinery to reduce direct contact. Paying more attention to the weather on excavation days.

4. Control

Increased use of personal protection equipment (PPE) and paying more attention to containment within the site.
