You never handled another cowboy's hat, unless given permission, other wise this was grounds for a fist fight. Never set your hat on a bed either, although I think this had more to do with superstition than manners of any kind. It's supposed to bring bad luck.

One summer while helping neighbors brand, they had a chuck wagon, which we gathered at for meals. One cowboy had been consistently disrespectful and uncaring about the cowboy code, and one afternoon it all came to a head. He was introduced to the age old tradition of chapping.

Several cowboys grabbed him and held him over the tongue of the chuck wagon, while an older cowboy took off his chaps and proceeded to whip him across the back side with the chaps. This hurt the ego, much more than the rear end. Be All That You Can Be: The Company Persona and Language Alignment

It’s not just CEOs and corporate spokespeople who need effective language to be the message. The most successful advertising taglines are not seen as slogans for a product. They are the product. From M&M’s “melts in your mouth, not in your hand” to “Please don’t squeeze the Charmin” bathroom tissue, from the “plop, plop, fizz, fizz” of Alka-Seltzer to “Fly the friendly skies of United,” there is no light space between the product and its marketing. Words that work reflect “not only the soul of the brand, but the company itself and its reason for being in business,” according to Publicis worldwide executive creative director David Droga.

In the same vein, advertising experts identify a common quality among the most popular and long-lasting corporate icons: Rather than selling for their companies, these characters personify them. Ronald McDonald, the Marlboro Man, Betty Crocker, the Energizer Bunny — they aren’t shills trying to talk us into buying a Big Mac, a pack of smokes, a box of cake mix, a package of batteries; they don’t even personalize the product. Just like the most celebrated slogans, they are the product.

Walk through any bookstore and you’ll find dozens of books about the marketing and branding efforts of corporate America. The process of corporate communication has been thinly sliced and diced over and over, but what you won’t find is a book about the one truly essential characteristic in our twenty-first-century world: the company persona and how words that work are used to create and sustain it.

The company persona is the sum of the corporate leadership, the corporate ethos, the products and services offered, interaction with the customer, and, most importantly, the language that ties it all together. A majority of large companies do not have a company persona, but those that do benefit significantly. Ben & Jerry’s attracts customers in part because of the funky names they gave to the conventional (and unconventional) flavors they offer, but the positive relationship between corporate management and their employees also plays a role, even after Ben and Jerry sold the company. McDonald’s in the 1970s and Starbucks over the past decade became an integral part of the American culture as much for the lifestyle they reflected as the food and beverages they offered, but the in-store lexicon helped by setting them apart from their competition. (Did any customers ever call the person who served them a cup of coffee a “barista” before Starbucks made the term popular?) Language is never the sole determinant in creating a company persona, but you’ll find words that work associated with all companies that have one.

And when the message, messenger, and recipient are all on the same page, I call this rare phenomenon “language alignment,” and it happens far less frequently than you might expect. In fact, virtually all of the companies that have hired my firm for communication guidance have found themselves linguistically unaligned.

This manifests itself in two ways. First, in service-oriented businesses, the sales force is too often selling with a different language than the marketing people are using. There’s nothing wrong with individualizing the sales approach to each customer, but when you have your sales force promoting a message that has no similarity with the advertising campaign, it undermines both efforts. The language in the ads and promotions must match the language on the street, in the shop, and on the floor. For example, Boost Mobile, which caters to an inner city youth demographic, uses the slogan “Where you at?” Not grammatically (or politically) correct — but it’s the language of their consumer.

And second, corporations with multiple products in the same space too often allow the language of those products to blur and bleed into each other. Procter & Gamble may sell a hundred different items, but even though each one fills a different need, a different space, and/or a different category, it is perfectly fine for them to share similar language. You can use some of the same verbiage to sell soap as you would to sell towels, because no consumer will confuse the products and what they do.

Not so for a company that is in a single line of work, say selling cars or selling beer, where companies use the exact same adjectives to describe very different products. In this instance, achieving linguistic alignment requires a much more disciplined linguistic segmentation. It is almost always a more effective sales strategy to divvy up the appropriate adjectives and create a unique lexicon for each individual brand.

An example of a major corporation that has confronted both of these challenges and still managed to achieve linguistic alignment, even as they are laying off thousands of workers, is the Ford Motor Company — which manages a surprisingly diverse group of brands ranging from Mazda to Aston Martin. The Ford corporate leadership recognized that it was impossible to separate the Ford name, corporate history, heritage, and range of vehicles — so why bother. They came as a package. Sure, Ford maintains individual brand identity, through national and local ad campaigns and by creating and maintaining a separate image and language for each brand. For example, “uniquely sensual styling” certainly applies when one is talking about a Jaguar S Type, but would probably not be pertinent for a Ford F 250 pickup truck. But the fact that the CEO carries the Ford name communicates continuity to the company’s customers, and Bill Ford sitting in front of an assembly line talking about leadership and innovation in all of Ford’s vehicles effectively puts all the individual brands into alignment.

The words he uses — “innovation,” “driven,” “re-committed,” “dramatically,” “dedicated” — represent the simplicity and brevity of effective communications, and they are wrapped around the CEO who is the fourth-generation Ford to lead the company — hence credibility. The cars are the message, Bill Ford is the messenger, the language is dead-on, and Ford is weathering the American automotive crisis far better than its larger rival General Motors. Again, the language of Ford isn’t the only driver of corporate image and sales — but it certainly is a factor.

In fact, the brand-building campaign was so successful that GM jumped on board. But Ford quickly took it a step further. In early 2006, they began to leverage their ownership of Volvo (I wonder how many readers did not know that Ford bought Volvo in 1999 and purchased Jaguar a decade earlier) to communicate a corporate-wide commitment to automotive safety, across all of its individual brands and vehicles. Volvo is one of the most respected cars on the road today, and aligning all of Ford behind an industry leader is a very smart strategy indeed.

So what about the competition?

General Motors, once the automotive powerhouse of the world, has an equally diverse product line and arguably a richer history of technology and innovation, but their public message of cutbacks, buy-backs, and layoffs was designed to appeal to Wall Street, not Main Street, and it crushed new car sales. At the time of this writing, GM is suffering through record losses, record job layoffs, and a record number of bad stories about its failing marketing efforts.

It didn’t have to be this way.

The actual attributes of many of the GM product lines are more appealing than the competition, but the product image itself is not. To own a GM car is to tell the world that you’re so 1970s, and since what you drive is considered an extension and expression of yourself to others, people end up buying cars they actually like less because they feel the cars will say something more about them.

Think about it. Here’s a company that was the first to develop a catalytic converter, the first to develop an advanced anti-tipping stabilization technology, the first to develop engines that could use all sorts of blended gasolines, and most importantly in today’s market, the creator of OnStar — an incredible new-age computerized safety and tracking device. Yet most American consumers have no idea that any of these valuable innovations came from General Motors, simply because GM decided not to tell them. So instead of using its latest and greatest emerging technology to align itself with its customers, GM finds itself in a deteriorating dialogue with shareholders. No alignment = no sales.

Another problem with GM: No one knew that the various brands under the GM moniker were in fact . . . GM. Even such well-known brands as Corvette and Cadillac had become disconnected from the parent company. Worse yet, all the various brands (with the exception of Hummer, which couldn’t get lost in a crowd even if the brand manager wanted it to) were using similar language, similar visuals, and a similar message — blurring the distinction between brands and turning GM vehicles into nothing more than generic American cars. Repeated marketing failures were just part of GM’s recurring problems, but as that issue was completely within their control, it should have been the easiest to address.

When products, services, and language are aligned, they gain another essential attribute: authenticity. In my own market research for dozens of Fortune 500 companies, I have found that the best way to communicate authenticity is to trigger personalization: Do audience members see themselves in the slogan . . . and therefore in the product? Unfortunately, achieving personalization is by no means easy.

To illustrate how companies and brands in a competitive space create compelling personas for themselves while addressing the needs of different consumer groups, let’s take a look at cereals. Anyone can go out and buy a box of cereal. But different cereals offer different experiences. Watch and listen carefully to their marketing approach and the words they use.

Most cereals geared toward children sell energy, excitement, adventure, and the potential for fun — even more than the actual taste of the sugar-coated rice or wheat puffs in the cardboard box. On the other hand, cereal aimed at grown-ups is sold based on its utility to the maintenance and enhancement of health — with taste once again secondary.

Children’s cereals are pitched by nonthreatening cartoon characters — tigers, parrots, chocolate-loving vampires, Cap’ns, and a tiny trio in stocking caps — never an adult or authority figure. Adult cereals come at you head-on with a not-so-subtle Food Police message, wrapped in saccharine-sweet smiles, exclaiming that this cereal is a favorite of healthy and cholesterol-conscious adults who don’t want to get colon cancer! Ugghhh. Kids buy Frosted Flakes because “They’re grrrreat!” Adults buy Special K because we want to be as attractive and vigorous as the actors who promote it. When it comes to cereal, about the only thing parents and kids have in common is that the taste matters only slightly more than the image, experience, and product association — and if the communication appears authentic, they’ll buy.

And cereal certainly sells. From Cheerios to Cinnamon Toast Crunch, more than $6 billion worth of cold cereal was sold in the United States alone in 2005. If you were to look at the five top-selling brands, you would see a diverse list targeted to a diverse set of customers. The language used for each of these five brands is noticeably different, but in all cases totally essential.

In looking at the first and third best-selling brands of cereal, one might initially think that only a slight variation in ingredients mark their distinctions. Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios are both based around the same whole-grain O shaped cereal, but are in fact two very different products, beyond the addition of honey and a nut-like crunch.

The language behind Cheerios is remarkably simple and all-encompassing — “The one and only Cheerios.” Could be for kids . . . could be for young adults . . . could be for parents. Actually, Cheerios wants to sell to all of them. As its Web site states, Cheerios is the right cereal for “toddlers to adults and everyone in between.” The subtle heart-shaped bowl on each box suggests to the older consumer that the “whole-grain” cereal is a healthy start to a healthy day. But the Web site also has a section devoted entirely to younger adults, complete with testimonials and “tips from new parents” talking about how Cheerios has helped them to raise happy, healthy children. The language behind Cheerios works because it transcends the traditional societal boundaries of age and adds a sense of authenticity to the product.

While you could probably live a happy and healthy existence with Cheerios as your sole cereal choice, there is a substantial segment of the cereal market that demands more. For the cereal-consuming public roughly between the ages of four and fourteen, a different taste and linguistic approach is required. Buzz the Bee, the kid-friendly mascot of Honey Nut Cheerios, pitches the “irresistible taste of golden honey,” selling the sweetness of the product to a demographic that craves sweet foods. While the parent knows that his or her child wants the cereal because of its sweet taste (as conveyed through the packaging), Honey Nut Cheerios must still pass the parent test. By putting such statements as “whole-grain” and “13 essential vitamins and minerals” on the box, the product gains authenticity, credibility, and the approval of the parent.

Two different messages on one common box effectively markets the same product to both children and parents alike, helping to make Honey Nut Cheerios the number three top-selling cereal in 2004. So with the addition of honey and nuts, General Mills, the producer of the Cheerios line, has filled the gap between toddlers and young adults, and completed the Cheerios cradle-to-grave lifetime hold on the consumer.

To take another example, if you want people to think you’re hip and healthy, you make sure they see you drinking bottled water — and the fancier the better. No one walking around with a diet Dr Pepper in hand is looking to impress anybody. These days, there’s almost a feeling that soft drinks are exclusively for kids and the uneducated masses. There’s a cache to the consumption of water, and expensive and exclusive brands are all the rage. Now, there may be a few people who have such extremely refined, educated taste buds that they can taste the difference between Dasani and Aquafina (I certainly can’t), but the connoisseurs of modish waters are more likely than not posers (or, to continue the snobbery theme, poseurs). You won’t see many people walking around Cincinnati or Syracuse clutching fancy bottled water. Hollywood, South Beach, and the Upper East Side of New York City are, as usual, another story.

There’s one final aspect of being the message that impacts what we hear and how we hear it. How our language is delivered can be as important as the words themselves, and no one understands this principle better than Hollywood.

At a small table tucked away in the corner of a boutique Italian restaurant on the outskirts of Beverly Hills, I had the opportunity to dine with legendary actors Charles Durning, Jack Klugman, and Dom DeLuise. The entire dinner was a litany of stories of actors, writers, and the most memorable movie lines ever delivered. (Says Klugman, an Emmy Award winner, “A great line isn’t spoken, it is delivered.”) Best known for his roles in The Odd Couple and Quincy, Klugman told a story about how Spencer Tracy was practicing his lines for a movie late in his career in the presence of the film’s screenwriter. Apparently not pleased with the reading, the writer said to Tracy, “Would you please pay more attention to how you are reading that line? It took me six months to write it,” to which Tracy shot back, “It took me thirty years to learn how to say correctly the line that took you only six months to write.”

Spencer Tracy knew how to be the message — and his shelf of Academy Awards proved it.

Overhead Handling of Materials in Industrial Environment

Material handling is one of the key phenomena in any industrial environment. The mechanical device to be adopted for such handling depends upon a number of factors such as weight of the materials, distance to be handled, frequency and repetitiveness of handling, economy of time and cost, safety and the process of manufacturing. An environment of high degrees of temperature and distancing away from such environment is another aspect that necessitates handling of materials through overhead cranes. An overhead crane, also called a bridge crane operating over the working environment, runs horizontally over two parallel runways coupled to a traveling bridge. House Blessings – Bless Yours NOW!

It's time to kick the enemy out of our homes and our of family's lives. My wife and I recently bought an 85 year old Victorian home in Stephenville, Texas. We call it Vanderbilt Place and we run it as a rooming house. On New Year's Eve 2005, along with some friends, we prayed a blessing over the house. It made such a huge difference insofar as not only keeping the place occupied but also in the quality of renter we received from that day onward.

Later, after sharing this experience with a friend, a local business woman asked if we would pray with her over her business. Once we prayed, not only did productivity soar, but the strong ungodly element decreed dramatically, starting with the manager's resignation several months later.

In this message, I did not want to get too ritualistic, thereby possibly inviting some other religious devil. Consider this a model; feel free to customize it for your needs. So, I'm keeping it simple and duplicatable so that others might be able to bless THEIR home … people like YOU! Do not wait for Sunday to do something spiritual … we are the Church, NOT the buildings! Do not wait for a minister either … you Are one according to Scripture.

In America today, we tend to scream at societal issues and throw money at our problems. We do a great deal of finger pointing, too. What I'm suggesting is that, house by house, American Christians must take back what the enemy has stolen from us. Starting TODAY! As they say, if you want something you've never had, you've got to do something you've never done.

Single parents, grandfathers, college students alone in your dorm, apartment unwellers AND apartment managers or property owners – if you are a Christian, you have the authority to take dominion over your dwelling place. Do not delay. Gather some friends and a bottle of virgin olive oil from the kitchen and start praying and anointing as the Spirit leads … first your place, then THEIRS! There's power in agreement so, regardless of their conviction, go for it! If you like, have communion afterwards or sing some hymns. Here's what we're doing. Do likewise and be blessed!

1) TAKE AUTHORITY OVER SPIRITS THAT HAVE BEEN WELCOMED THROUGHOUT THE HOME'S HISTORY – LEAVE DOORS OPEN FOR THEIR ESCAPE. The Bible Declares, "Submit yourself to God, resist the devil and he will flee." Here's a prayer you can begin with:

In the Name of Jesus our Messiah, and by the power of His Blood and His Cross, and the Holy Spirit that raised Him from the dead and now dwells within us, we bind all spirits in the air, and the fire and the water, in the ground and the underground and the nether world, and we bind any satanic forces of nature that have been assigned to this dwelling place. You will steal from us no longer! In fact, you will repay us sevenfold, according to Eph 4; 28. "When the thief is done he must repay seven fold". That includes sevenfold time, energy, money, health and anything else stolen from God's children.

We break all generational and word curses, hexes, or spells, or any witchcraft or occult activity that have been invited into this house – on purpose or by accident – through the generations past.

We bind the interaction and interplay of demonic spirits within these walls. And we claim the protection of the shed Blood of Jesus Christ over this house and grounds, and over every person who ever spend so much as a few moments upon this property. May they receive God's blessing!

We call out to you, Holy Spirit. Come now and fill this place, never to leave! We pray this in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

1. The Bible teachers us that a home is far more than a physical building.

Proverbs 24: 3-4

By wisdom a house is built,
and by understanding it is established;
by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

2. We need God's presence, power and direction for our lives and homes to be fruitful.

Psalms 127: 1

Without the LORD builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Without the LORD watches over the city,
the watchman stays wake in vain.

3. The Bible indicates that it is important to dedicate our homes to God. Before going into battle, the men in the Bible were warned to dedicate their homes!

Deuteronomy 20: 5

Then the officers will speak to the people, saying, 'What man is there that has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it. '

4. God told his people to write his word on the doorposts of their homes.

Many Jewish people today place a portion of God's Word on a parchment scroll in a container on the doorposts of their homes. They touch the scroll every time they go in or out to remind them that their homes belong to God, and what happens there is to be directed by God's Word.

Deuteronomy 6: 6-9

And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your hearts and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they will be as frontlets between your eyes.

And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

5. When a person dedicates their house to God, we trust that God responds to their commitment. When Solomon dedicated the temple, God responded, speaking to him.

For now I have chosen and consecuted this house that my name may be there for ever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time.

6. When people in the Early Christian movement gathered to teach and preach about Jesus, and to pray in the power of the Spirit, they often met in homes. Even today, there is a growing movement throughout the Western world – something our third world brethren have been doing for decades – meeting in homes or anywhere the Spirit leads them to.

And every day in the temple and at home they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Car Sales – Tired of Working 60 to 70 Hours Standing on a Concrete Lot?

I keep running into people I know from the car business that are tired of putting up with the hassle of selling every day to make chump change and have to start over from scratch with new prospects. The dealership keeps most of the money made while they do most of the work. Just when they think they are building up a nice pool of clients that will refer friends and come back to purchase future vehicles, they lose them to another dealership that just moved into town.

Consumers are getter smarter and harder to sell. It is just too easy for them to find what a car should be worth when it is new or used, and even find other cars for sell at better prices on Craigslist, Ebay, and other online sites where deals on cars for sell can be found .

It is too easy for them to use that information and negotiate you down and out to where you lose almost all of your responsibilities if you still want to make a sale.

They are exhausted with the battle of working till their joints ache standing around on an asphalt lot praying that somebody will step onto the lot just so they can fight over that customer with other sales reps like a pride of lions hunting a wounded gazelle.

They are sick of losing deals to their own dealership's sales reps while they were on lunch break or a day off when the customer came back looking for them.

If you were offered a $ 70,000 base salary as well as an additional $ 300 for each sell you made, I would not blame you for wanted to stay where you are. That would never happen though. They keep selling you on what a great deal you have being able to have customers come in from the dealership paying for the advertising, etc.

But regardless of what the dealership does in advertising, fancy balloons, special offers, etc., those vehicles will not sell themselves. You go for a test drive with your customers and answer their questions for what looks like an eternity. You know they are interested, but just can not make up their mind. You can not pressure them because you may lose the deal. They end up wanting to think about it because they want to go over their finances with their spouse. They come back the next day and want to test drive it again with their spouse. You let them and then answer more questions. They tell you about what other better deals they found online and that their mechanic said they should not pay your price unless you agree to fix something first. You do all of this work and then have them back out last minute and buy something on eBay or Craigslist.

Even if you were to make a sale on a $ 70,000 vehicle, will you make more than $ 300?

You are at the mercy of the car lot. If nobody shows up, you have nobody to sell to.

Your back and feet ache and throb at the end of a long day.

You are away from home more than you would like to be.

As a child, when people asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up, did you tell them, "I want to stand around on a concrete parking lot for 70 hours a week waiting for people to show up that I can convince to just be happy settling for buying a sub-par vehicle because they can not afford the one they really want. "

It is getting harder and harder to make car sales. Especially with our economy being how it is with major dealerships closing their doors.

You need to take a look at starting a home based internet business. The industry is growing at an exponential rate and you can be a part of it.

How Much Traffic Gets 1st Page From Google's SERP?

Almost 8 out of 10 people search the web to find services – buy gadgets, clothes, find doctors, find restaurants, order food and almost everything you can imagine …

Internet opened up a big box full of services and your business has to be in that box otherwise you miss 8 out 10 of your potential customers.

It is almost a crime for you business, if you do not have a web presence.

Only 2 in 10 still use dusty, thick, paper directory books – like Yellow Pages.

8 out 10 search the BIG 3 to get information. Big 3 search engines are the dominant names on the search market:

  • Google
  • Bing
  • Yahoo

Combined, BIG 3 represent more than 95% of the search market.

ASK and AOL completes the picture with other 4-5%. Stats from comScore proved it.

Who uses Google? Bing? Yahoo?

The answer is everyone relies on Search Engines more and more each and every day and Internet gets into our life from all the angels.

Our PC is connected to the Internet, our smart phones and tablets are too and even the old TV has a smart set-top box that links it to the mighty WWW.

So, we all are hooked in, but who uses what?

Google tends to attract more skeptical individuals that search a lot until they decide where to buy from.

Yahoo still has more conservators users, Yahoo's loyal and somehow older, which also search less until they buy things.

Bing powers Yahoo now and it will bring the change for old Yahoo – Bing has a new breed of users – the skeptics that dislike Google and want a different search experience.

So, it's damn important to get your business listed on the big WWW and also you want it placed as high as possible in BIG 3's SERP (Search Engine Return Page).

Once you are there, you want your business to be visited and get thousands of potential customers, but actually who gets the traffic?

It's definitely a step forward to have a Site, Blog, and Social Media presence for your Business, but to get the traffic you need to AIM for PAGE # 1 in SERP of BIG 3's.

How much traffic Google's Page # 1 gets?

Let's start saying … a lot …. almost everyone gets the info from first page, which by default has 10 organic results displayed on it .

Very rare, we adventure exploring Page 2, Page 3, Page 4 … of SERP and even if we do, probably we do it for research purposes and NOT to buy something.

If you want your services to be bought …. you need to be on PAGE # 1 of SERP for all your most important keywords.

Page # 1 gets 90-95% of the traffic; the other pages get only impressions and NO CLICKS.

It's true that Page # 1 in Google, by example, gets all the cream and based on stats the Top 10 traffic split would be (example below is based on my experience and my websites stats):

Get the first spot on the first page in Google SEPR for your important key phrases and you will get between 35% and 60% of the clicks from a particular key traffic – percent may depend on your particular niche.

Second spot is not bad either, it will give you 10-20% of the clicks and number 3 wins at least 10%.

In almost all the niches, from forth place onwards you will get less than 10% of the clicks and the drop is more linear than for the first three positions.

Leather Furniture Consumer's Guide – Abbreviated Version

Planning on buying leather furniture? Did you know there are different types of leather? Which is best for you? Read on and learn some important tips to keep in mind when shopping.

Start by thinking about the usage patterns you expect with your new leather pieces. Will the furniture be placed in an active, "high-impact" setting with children, pets, food and drinks galore? Or, is your home a quiet, "low-impact" environment?

Quality leather is a remarkably durable material that will offer many years of comfort. However, the right type of leather should be selected based upon how you expect the furniture to be enjoyed. As a leather furniture repair and restoration specialist, I repeatedly hear from my clients how their sales person, designer, etc. never told them the leather would stain, fade, tear, etc. So, avoid these problems by learning a few simple keys and asking a few simple questions. To understand the issues let me take you through a mini-primer about leather.

There are two ways of painting upholstery grade leather — with dyes only or with dyes and pigments. Leather colored strictly with a dye is referred to as unfinished, whereas pigmented leather is classified as finished. So, what's the difference?

If leather is colored only with dye then there is no protective coating. It is sometimes referred to as "pure-aniline" leather. (Aniline is a type of dye that colors leather.) This leather is soft, supple to the touch. Its color is rich and deep as dyes are translucent and they penetrate, often completely through the leather. The leather's natural beauty is accentuated by the dye giving the furniture a luxurious look and feel. Only the finest hides can qualify to be unfinished, so unsurprisingly, it's the most expensive category. However, there is a dark side. This class of leather stains easily (these hides are highly porous) and the color fades, in some cases very quickly. (UV's the culprit.)

Finished leather is colored with the same aniline dye as unfinished leather however these hides go through a secondary coloring process. A pigmented coating (finish) is applied that is chemically engineered specifically for leather. It has to flex and allow the leather to breath so it has unique attributes that differentiate it from common wall paint. Pigmented leather finishes are opaque, creating a colored film on top of the hide. The color coating is then augmented with a clear coat forming its primary protection. This clear coat also dictates the sheen, from gloss to matte. Quality finished leather may not feel as soft and supple as unfinished, but will be able to withstand the rigors of an active household. It will not stain almost as readily. It's easier to clean, and fades so slowly, you'll never notice it.

Your first key is placement. Simply put, active, high impact environment like a family room, media center, conference room, dining room, etc. dictates finished leather. A low impact home, with UV tinted windows and little threat of staining can indulge the beauty of unfinished leather.

The next step is to consider your budget. This is where your expectations are appropriately set. There are two primary considerations, the leather and the frame.

Top-grain leather is the most durable, but will cost more. This is the epidermis of the skin which offers vast majority of the hide's durability. Split-hide leather (leather "split" from the epidermis) will not stand up to the test of time in an active household, but as a low grade is generally more affordable. If you want a piece that will last a long time, then you must insist on top-grain leather.
