Narcotics and Foot Pain – A Poor Combination

The use of narcotic medication to treat body pain is a common practice for many doctors and other health care providers. Narcotics are effective at relieving many types of pain, and are safe if properly used. The use of narcotics to treat severe foot pain is a practice that still enjoys some popularity, primarily amongstst non-foot specialists. Unfortunately, unlike pain in the rest of the body, foot pain often has a mechanical cause directly related to the way one's foot structure functions when walking. The use of narcotic pain medication for foot pain will often lead to a worsening of the condition causing the pain. This article will discuss the nature of narcotic medication, foot pain, and how the two do not need to work well together.

Narcotic pain medication is part of a large family of prescription drugs called opioids that effect the way people perceive pain sensation. These drugs typically bind themselves to cells from tissue found in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal system. The part of a cell an opioid binds to is called the opioid receptor. The medication binds itself to this area, and the end result of a complex process that follows is reduced pain sensation, increased pain tolerance, and euphoria. Unfortunately, some side effects can occur despite a good track record of safety when used properly. These can include sedation, a reduction in breathing ability, and constipation. Dependance on these drugs can also develop if they are taken long enough. When someone becomes addicted to pain medication, the dependency effect as well the euphoria created by the drug reinforces the body's desire to continue on the medication, even if it is not medically needed. By stopping the medication, a withdrawal effect can also develop, limiting the ability of an addict to discontinue the medication.

The traditional use of narcotic pain medication was for chronic, unrelenting pain. This type of pain is seen with terminal cancer, major surgery recovery, or during severe injuries like burns and major fractures. Recently, the use of narcotic pain medication has expanded to many types of pain, both acute and chronic. The masking of the pain can be beneficial for people to help restore a normal life without pain. This works fine if the pain is from an inflamed gallbladder, back arthritis, or rib fracture. When the source of pain comes from a foot injury, a more unique approach must be taken to control the pain, as simply 'feeling better' can often lead to a worsening of the injury that caused the foot pain and a delay in healing.

Most foot pain is due to an injury that occurs directly or indirectly as a result of some abnormality of the foot structure. For example, the vast majority of heel pain is due to an injury of a ligament in the arch called the plantar fascia. This injury is usually due to flat feet or high arches causing strain or shock, respectively, on the fascia. Without the abnormal foot arch structure, the heel would not hurt. The same can be said for many other common sources of foot pain, including Achilles tendonitis, arthritis, neuromas (pinched nerve), most toe pain, pain in the ball of the foot, bunion pain, and many causes of pain around the ankles. The common factor seen in these various conditions is the development of inflammation in the foot as a result of the body's overzealous attempt to heal the injured tissue. The treatment for these conditions ideally needs to revolve around supporting the injured foot, restricting motion at the injured area, and reducing the overzealous infection the body creates during the healing process. By reducing the inflammation, the pain is reduced. With this and proper support, the body heals efficiently without excessive pain.

Unfortunately, the use of narcotic pain medication only addresses pain control, and not inflammation or foot structure. Narcotics do not help at all with pollution, which is the true source of most foot pain. These medications will only reduce the body's perception of pain, allowing the inflammation process to continue. This will delay the body's ability to heal the foot for two reasons. Firstly, the excess of inflammation not reduced by the narcotic medication will continue and the body will heal when it is good and ready. Often this time period will be for much longer than what is really necessary, since the body forms an overzealous reaction to injury just to be on the 'safe side'. Secondly, with narcotics, the tension of many people is to resume activity as normal, since the foot does not hurt as much. When foot pain is correctly reduced because of inflammation reduction, increased activity may not be as harmful if proper foot support is still maintained. However, if foot pain is simply eliminated by a narcotic pain medication only, the feeling of 'normal' invites many into mistakenly resuming their activity as usual. This only worsens the foot injury and increases the inflammation, as the true nature of the injury is masked by the pain relief.

The foot is unique in that it receives the weight of the body above it and the stress of walking below it. Injuries to the foot need much more support and rest than any other part of the body. Narcotic pain medication use for foot pain allows excessive activity too early in the healing process, and should not be used for most types of foot pain as it does not address the underlying cause of foot pain: inflammation as a result of mechanically-caused injury. There are times in which narcotic pain medication is acceptable, and even advised for foot pain. Severe crushing injuries, fractures, burns, and other injuries that have nothing to do with foot structure or normal infection can benefit from pain control. However, narcotic pain control in fractures should be short term, and strict control of motion and activity is necessary, even if the foot 'feet better' with pain control. Foot pain from surgery can also be treated with narcotic pain medication in the short term, as much of that pain is due to the cutting of tissue. Most people require only a brief period of pain control following foot or ankle surgery, which does not usually exceed 3 weeks in most cases.

Narcotic pain medication has its place in the treatment of pain in the body. When dealing with most causes of foot pain, the combination of a likelihood of worsening the foot injury, delaying healing, and the problems of narcotic addiction make the use of these powerful drugs ill-advised. Properly addressing the inflammation of the injury, supporting the foot, and dealing with the abnormal foot structure that often led to the painful condition in the first place are far better ways to treat foot and ankle pain.

Xbox 360 E71 Error Repair Tips

One of the errors that you can experience on your Xbox 360 e71 error. Quite often this problem may be accompanied with a ring of red lights on the front of your console. In this article you are going to learn what causes the Xbox e71 code, as well as if there is anything you can do to fix the problem.

Unlike the more common "red ring of death" and e74 problems, the Xbox 360 e71 error is not caused by overheating damaging the graphics processor unit (GPU) or video scaler (HANA / ANA) chip. However, the problem is that nobody is 100% sure what actually causes the e71 in the first place.

Most likely the problem relates to dashboard and console updates, such as the fall update of 2006. Also, the problem appears to arise from gamers incorrectly jumping their hardware or doing botched firmware hacks which then prevent the system from functioning correctly.

Have you recently updated your Xbox 360 in anyway, or have you (or anyone else) tried some form of firmware hack or flash? If so, this is probably the cause of the e71 code on your Xbox, however, it could also be completely random.

Fixing the Xbox e71 is quite tricky. Firstly, you could try completely resetting your Xbox 360. To do this, enter the dashboard, go to the right-most column, go and press "Initial Set Up" then follow the instructions on screen.

If you can not access this screen due to the e71 error on your Xbox 360, you can try holding the "Y" button on your controller as you switch the console on. This will enter the same process, and restore default factory settings. However, there is still a chance that this might not work, and that you could be stranded with the e71 code.

Depreciation, Causes of Depreciation, Need for Provision of Depreciation

Life span of an asset to a business rests primarily, on the purpose of its acquisition and secondary, on its nature. An item acquired for immediate consumption or sale is a short-lived asset and that meant for prolonged use, is long lived asset, though both produce revenues. Whereas the former asset expires within one year of its acquisition, the latter asset lasts longer. Hence almost entire expenditure on a short lived asset becomes an expense and is matched against current year’s revenue.

But the position is otherwise with a long-lived asset which wears out or depreciates over a long period. Accordingly, the outlay of a fixed asset is spread over several years and annually only a fraction thereof expires. Simply, this fraction, called expired cost or depreciation, is charged against current revenues and the rest, termed un expired cost, is carried forward for future expiration.

“Depreciation may be defined as the permanent decrease in the value of an asset due to use and/or the lapse of the time.” -Terminology of Institute of Cost and Management Accountants, England

“Depreciation is the permanent and continuous diminution in the quality, quantity or value of an asset.” -Pickles

“Depreciation may be defined as measure of the exhaustion of effective life of an asset from any cause during a given period.” -Spicer and Pegler

“Depreciation is’ the gradual and permanent decrease in the value of an asset from any cause.”-Carter

Objects of making provision for depreciation

For attaining following objects, depreciation accounting is a must for every business:

(1) Recovery of cost incurred on fixed assets over their useful life so as to keep owner’s capital intact;

(2) Provision is for replacement cost on the retirement of original assets ;

(3) to include the depreciation in the cost of production to find out the correct cost of production;

(4) to find out correct profit for the year ;

(5) to find out the correct financial position through balance sheet.

Causes of Depreciation

Depreciation may be of two types :-

(1) Internal-Depreciation which occurs for certain inherent normal causes is known as internal depreciation. The causes of internal depreciation are :

(1.1) Wear and Tear-An asset declines on account of continued use e.g. building, plant,

machinery etc. such decline depends upon quantum of use of an asset. If a factory works double-shift instead of single shift, depreciation on plant and machinery will be doubled. It is obvious that such loss is unavoidable. An asset may be kept in proper working conditions

through repairs for the time being, but it can not be done so permanently: At one time the asset will become unfit for repairs, when it will no longer be suitable.

(1.2) Depletion-Some assets decline in value proportionate to the quantum of production, e.g. mines, quarry etc. With the raising of coal etc. from coal mine, the total deposit reduces gradually and after some time it will be fully exhausted. Then its value will be nil.

(2) External-Depreciation caused by some external reasons is called external

depreciation.

The causes of external depreciation are:

(2.1) Obsolescence

Some assets, though in proper working order, may become obsolete. For example old machine becomes obsolete with the invention of more economical and sophisticated machine, whose productive capacity is generally higher and cost of production is lesser. In order to survive in the competitive market the manufacturer must install new machine replacing the old one.

(2.2) Passage of time

Some assets diminish in value on account of sheer passage of time, even though they are not used e.g. lease hold property, patent rights, copy rights etc.

(2.3) Accidents

Assets may be destroyed by abnormal reasons such as fire, earth quake, flood etc. In such a case the destroyed asset may be written-off as loss and a new one purchased.

Need for Provision of Depreciation

The need for provision for depreciation arises for the following reasons:

(1) Ascertainment of true profit or loss-Depreciation is a loss. So unless it is considered like all other expenses and losses, true profit/loss cannot be ascertained. In other words, depreciation must be considered in order to find out true profit/loss of a business.

(2) Ascertainment of true cost of production-Goods are produced with the help of plant and machinery which incurs depreciation in the process of production. This depreciation must be considered as a part of the cost of production of goods. Otherwise, the cost of production would be shown less than the true cost. Sale price is normally fixed on the basis of cost of production. So, if the cost of production is shown less by ignoring depreciation, the sale price will also be fixed at a low level resulting in loss to the business;

(3) True Valuation of Assets-Value of assets gradually decreases on account of depreciation. If depreciation is not taken into account, the value of asset will be shown in the books at a figure higher than its true value and hence the true financial position of the business will not be disclosed through Balance Sheet.

(4) Replacement of Assets-After some time an asset will be completely exhausted on account of use. A new asset then be purchased requiring large sum of money. If the whole amount of profit is withdrawn from business each year without considering the loss on account of depreciation, necessary sum may not be available for. buying the new assets. In such a case the required money is to be collected by introducing fresh capital or by obtaining loan by selling some other assets. This is contrary &0sound commercial policy.

(5) Keeping Capital’ Intact-Capital invested in buying an asset, gradually diminishes on

account of depreciation. If loss on account of depreciation is not considered in determining profit/ loss at the year end, profit will be shown more. If the excess profit is withdrawn, the working capital will gradually reduce, the business will become weak and its profit earning

capacity will also fall.

(6) Legal Restriction-According to Sec. 205 of the Companies Act, 1956 dividend cannot be declared without charging depreciation on fixed assets. Thus in “Case of joint stock companies charging of depreciation is compulsory.

Used Brick – Blessing or Curse?

Do you have 'used brick' on your home or business? If so then you probably know by now, that they can be a blessing and a curse as well. How is that … you may wonder? Well used brick certainly are a beautiful veneer for colonial or traditional applications however, if they are not maintained properly … watch out!

You could find yourself deep into the thousands in repair cost that could have been avoided, if you had only followed these simple tips to used brick maintenance.

What are used brick? Used bricks are salvaged from old building when the building are torn down or demolished. They became widely available in the '70s when many older downtown buildings across the country were being raised. They were in abundance and a source of cheap building materials for the builders.

They can vary broadly is size and shape and are usually red, orange, brown and a pink-salmon color. They have rounded corners from the demolition process, soft and sometimes have chips in the face. Most were salvaged from the back-up portion or interior walls of old masonry buildings and have various stains ranged from black soot, whitewash to paint. It is one of the few bricks though, that blend perfectly with colonial architecture. Unfortunately architecture aside, they were used extensively on all types of buildings because they were cheap and easy to find

How do I know if I have used brick on my home or business? Used brick have a specific character of being soft and when you look at a used brick building from the street it has an old appearance. If you take a screwdriver and scrape it along the surface of a used brick, you will likely gouge the surface of the brick easily.

A new brick wall on the other hand would be too hard, if not impossible to gouge and are more regular and rectangular in shape. If you looked at a new brick building from the street it would have a more uniform appearance and look 'newer'.

How do I look for damage in used brick? Fortunately used brick tend to deteriorate as individual units unlike new brick, which tend to deteriorate in sections. As you walk around your building look closely for bricks that have a chalky, orange color to them. These bricks are the first to deteriorate in a used brick wall and for some reason will be very noticeable.

As you look closer at the wall you may also find bricks that are 'powdering' which means that they turn to powder as they deteriorate. Regardless of how they manifest, you should remove and replace all the damaged used bricks that you find. While inspecting the individual bricks for damage also look for cracks and loose or missing mortar. Fill in any holes that you find and repair any cracks. This will go a long way to preventing excess water from entering the wall.

After you have completed the repairs you are now ready for your final and most important preventive maintenance chore.

Seal your bricks! There is nothing more valuable to your used brick building than a saturation application of high quality masonry sealer. I can not be more enthusiastic about the protection of used bricks with sealer. Most used brick are probably over 100 years old at this point and need protection.

As you watch that liquid gold being sucked into your brickwork by the gallons, remember that it will protect the used brick and save you ongoing maintenance and repair cost over the long haul. It is the cheapest insurance that you can buy against used brick deterioration.

Emphasis and Balance in Interior Design

Emphasis in interior design can be used to draw one's eyes in a particular direction or to a specific detail. For example, if you are working with a room that has a low ceiling vertical stripes can be introduced so as to make the room seem taller. Vertical stripes will draw the eyes upwards and therefore create vertical emphasis or also known as stress in a design. Alternately, the use of horizontal stripes would create horizontal stress or emphasis and draw the eyes around the room. Think about wooden moldings such as picture rails and dado rails which are often introduced into a scheme to break up large wall spaces. These kind of details although often subtle can have a major impact on your design.

Another factor to consider when planning an interior design scheme is that of contrast as without it any scheme would be bland and boring. By consciously choosing contrasting elements such as plain and patterned textures or by combining modern styling with antique furnishings, the details will often complement each other theby intensifying prominent characteristics of your design. Choosing contrasting details is the same as choosing contrasting colors and they key to success is getting the balance right.

Symmetrical balance in interior design occurs when one side of a scheme is the same as the other side but in reverse. Symmetrical balance is often seen in classical interiors which due to its more formal styling ratios heavily on proportion, symmetry and balance. Whilst such a scheme would obviously be well balanced, it can be deemed safe and therefore somewhere boring.

Asymmetrical balance is the opposite of the above. In this type of scheme objects on either side of the room would be different in proportion, size and layout. This type of scheme creates the impression of activity and movement and often comes across as being informal and more individual in style. Since asymmetrical schemes do not follow strict guidelines they offer more flexibility but by doing so make it harder to achieve visual balance.

Radial balance occurs when a scheme is arranged around a central point or focus but is less common in interior design. Such schemes often focus on setting on a round table or floral arrangements. Radial balance suggests movement through the circular arrangements and symmetry is used t achieve overall balance. This type of scheme is more individual and can therefore cross any number of interior styles.

There are many elements to consider when planning a scheme and it can be easy to get things wrong which is why people employ interior designers. It is important to take the time therefore to plan a scheme carefully so that you can visualize the end result and achieve balance in your design.

4 Steps to Replacing Garage Door Springs

Picture this if you will – it's early in the AM hours you're out cold. Suddenly, a loud crash wakes you from your deep sleep. You spring up and out of bed to find the source of the noise? Has the zombie apocalypse begin? Are Charlie Sheen and Emilo Estevez really delinquent garbage men? Or is Michael Bay and his' splosions in town filming Transformers 3?

None of the above. Perhaps you were just in a deep sleep. After looking through the house with a quick crusted eye once over, you decide to head back to the warm and cozy bed.

It is not until you've exhausted your snooze button that morning, now in mad rush to get yourself and children ready for work and school. Racing against the clock, you manage to get yourself and rat pack together as you scurry in a frenzy through the garage and into your car. But now your garage door does not open. You feverishly push the remote button with your first reaction being that the batteries must be dead. That's when all the pieces finally come together. The noise the woke you earlier that morning before the nagging electric buzzer on the clock radio. The noise you thought was part of your comatose state was actually a reality when you notice that the noise you heard was the snapping of your garage door spring.

Of all the days (chances are this was a Monday because everything that sucks usually happens on a Monday … not to mention that Mondays just suck in general), your garage door spring breaks and you find yourself and your kids trapped in the garage . Now the panic starts to set in as you wonder how you'll ever be able to get them to school and yourself to work. Not mention that this dilemma has pretty much immobilized you, your means of transportation to get ANYWHERE is now trapped in. In that instant, you may feel like the world is crashing down on you, and just you alone. Before you beat yourself up and start to repeatedly question, "Why me?", You should first know that garage door springs are one of the most called on repairs in the industry.

Garage door springs support the entire weight of the door. The springs are wound or stretched under pressure, tightening and loosing as you open and close the door. It's the door springs and not just the door opener that supports and lifts 300 plus pounds of weight of the door .. Like anything else under pressure, ever your springs WILL break. So in the event that you find yourself int his little predicament, what do you do?

Here's my recommended "4- Step Process for Repairing Your Garage Door Springs:

Step 1 – Get Your Car Out of The Garage

You must be saying to yourself, "If I could get my car out of the garage, I would not have a problem." If you're saying this, you're naturally speaking from frustration. The best way to get through a situation like this is to keep yourself level-headed and look for quick solutions that will allow you to continue your normal way of living without being interrupted by this common event. Just because your garage door springs have busted, does not mean that you do not have use of the garage door. It is still on track with its rollers and can be manually operated.

Pull the red emergency release cord located above the door to enable you to manually lift the door. Remember that the garage door is a heavy object, and even heavier without the support of the spring which would normally neutralize the weight. If it's too heavy to lift yourself, have someone else help you. If you accidently drop the door while you are manually lifting, DO NOT try and stop it with your foot. Dropping a 300 pound door on your foot or any other body part is bound to ruin your day.

Step 2 – Identify Your Spring

Identify which type of spring you have: Extension or Torsion. Torsion and Extension springs exert a force equal to the weight of your garage door. This counter balances the 200 to 300 pound door, rendering it weight neutral so it can easily be opened.

A Torsion spring runs across a bar at the top of the inside of the door. The spring is injured and under immunity tension. It's the tension of torsion spring that lifts the weight of the garage door.

Extension springs are found on either side of the door. These springs act like big steel rubber bands, stretching as the door is lowered.

Step 3 – Buy New Springs

Now that you know what type of spring you have, you need to purchase new ones. You'll want to replace all of your garage door springs at the same time. Having undergone similar aging and weathering, one broken garage door spring is a sign that the second one is about to break soon. There's no logical reason to fix one spring at a time and just wait for the other one to break, unless you enjoy the headaches and hassles.

Also, having one old spring and one new spring will throw off the balance of your garage door. You'll also burn out the motor on your garage door opener and have even more problems. You can find and purchase new garage door springs at your local hardware store, such as Home Depot or Lowes. Prices will vary depending on the type of spring size, quality, coating and cycles.

Size – You'll need to measure your existing spring to know exactly what size replacement you'll need. (4) The Overall Length of the Spring.

Coating – Is it galvanized, powder coated or oil tempered? Which is going to resist rust the longest?

Step 4 – Installation

Installing your new garage door springs is not only a lengthy and complicated process, but potentially dangerous. You have got to remember that the garage door springs are wound up with more tension than Steve Carell as the 40-Year Old Virgin. The slightest mistake or mis-calibration could be a deadly one.

9 times out of 10, homeowners will find the task of repairing or replacing garage door springs too complicated, if not too dangerous. Most people do not have the time or inclining to replace or repair the broken spring themselves. If that sounds like you, your best option would be to contact a professional technician. It will also save you the time in measuring and shopping for the right springs.

Hopefully, this information will not only help you and your family have a safe and happy summer, but will also keep you prepared and well-educated in the instance that this occurs any time of the year!

Balancing the Accounts and Necessity of Ledger

Balancing the Accounts

Whenever it is desired to balance an account, the two sides are added up, and if the totals of the two sides are unequal then the difference is put on the side having lesser total. This will make both the sides equal. The amount of the difference inserted is known as ‘balance’ of the account. In particulars column it is written as Balance c/d (carried down). In subsequent period it is known as Balance bid (brought down). If the total of the credit side of the account is less, the balance will be inserted on credit side with the words “By Balance c/d”. This balance is known as Debit Balance and after closing the account it will be shown on the debit side with the words “To Balance bid”. Similarly if the total of debit side of the account is less, the balance will be inserted on debit side with the words “To Balance c/d”. This balance is known as Credit Balance and after closing the account it will be shown on the credit side with the words “By Balance bid”.

Personal Accounts

It is worthwhile to refresh your memory and recall that personal accounts relate to individuals and business entities (firm; company, corporation etc.) and the rule is : Receiver is to be debited and giver is to be credited. Now if on any particular date the business wants to know as to how much amount is ‘due to’ or ‘due by’ a particular person to itself (business) then it should balance the account of the person concerned. Debit balance as per personal account signifies that the person is the debtor of the business i.e. person owes an amount equal to the balance to the business or the amount, represented by the balance is ‘due to’ the business by the person. Similarly, Credit balance as per personal account signifies that the person is the creditor of the business i.e. business owes an amount equal to the balance to the person or the amount represented by the balance is ‘due by’ the business to the person.

Real Account

These are the accounts relating to property or possession or rights. Rule is : “What comes in is to be debited and what goes out is to be credited.” Thus all incomings are to be recorded on the debit side and outgoings on the credit side. On any particular date these accounts should have ‘debits balance’ representing the worth of the item covered by the account. At the end of the year (generally) or at any other point of time when the financial position of the business is required to be ascertained these accounts are balanced. These balances are shown on the assets side of the statement of position or Balance Sheet. These accounts do have ‘debit balance’ which signifies the ‘book-value’ or ‘written down value’ or ‘going concern-value’ of the assets of the business as on that relevant date.

Nominal Accounts

These are the accounts showing the various heads of expenses and sources of income. At the end of the specified period (generally one year) these accounts are closed by transfer to the final accounts i.e. Trading or Profit and Loss Account.

Necessity of Ledger

Maintaining of ledger is a must in every accounting system. It is necessary as will be clear from its advantages:

(1) Transactions relating to a particular person, item or heading of expenditure’ or income are grouped in the concerned account at one place.

(2) When each account is periodically balanced it reflects the net position of that account. For example, how much is due from a customer or how much is payable to a supplier or what is the value of total purchases or what has been the expenditure on salaries? Such information is available by balancing the ledger accounts.

(3) Ledger is the stepping stone for preparing Trial Balance- which tests the arithmetical accuracy’ .of the accounting books.

(4) Since the entries recorded in the journal are referenced into ledger the possibility of errors or defalcations are reduced to the minimum.

(5) Ledger is the destination of all entries made in journal or sub-journals.

(6) Ledger is the “store-house” of all information which subsequently is used for preparing final accounts and financial statements.

Opening entry and its posting. In the case of an existing business we are required to pass an entry in the journal (on the basis of the Balance Sheet prepared at the end of the previous year) for bringing in the new books all assets and liabilities: this is known as Opening entry.

Is Carpet Off-Gassing Just a Bunch of Fake News? A Common Carpet Myth Debunked

Off-gassing has been floating around online as something we should fear from our carpeting. But first, what is off-gassing anyway? Off-gassing refers to possible volatile organic compounds or VOCs and chemicals being emitted from new furniture or similar household materials. Some people confuse that new carpet smell with the off-gassing of VOCs. But, let’s take a look at the facts.

If one looks up the term “off-gassing,” they will likely be met with scary headlines that claim household materials can cause serious health issues. These are some frightening claims, but as many of us would like to install new beautiful carpeting in our homes, it’s important to get at the truth and take some time to address these concerns.

First, it is said that carpet is one of the lowest emitters of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) among household furnishings and building materials. And, carpeting sold at trusted flooring companies goes through extensive indoor air quality tests before it even reaches the stores. An easy way to find out the level of standards for a particular carpet is by looking for a green label. ‘ Green Label,’ from the Carpet and Rug Institute, ensures that customers are purchasing the lowest emitting carpet, adhesive and cushion products on the market.

All-in-all, new carpet smell does not equal leaking chemicals. And, claims that formaldehyde is being emitted by off-gassing, another thing one might find online, is simply untrue. Formaldehyde is not a concern as it is no longer used in the manufacturing process in the United States. In fact, scientific studies now show that carpet is one of the lowest emitters of volatile organic compounds (VOCS) into the indoor environment. And, carpet has recently been proven to emit less VOCs than other household interior products like wall paint.

Although some love that new carpet smell, it may not be everyone’s favorite aroma. If this is the case, it is a good idea to open the windows after a carpet installation to allow the room to air out for a while. What VOCs new carpet may emit are short-lived and largely dissipate within 24 to 48 hours. And, this occurs even faster with fresh air ventilation.

The best way to find out about the safety of carpeting for the home is by speaking to carpet professionals and by asking questions. Flooring and carpeting professionals are well-versed in all things carpeting and will be able to address your concerns. They should be able to show you proof that the carpeting you’ve chosen has been given the Green Label and has gone through the proper testing.

Quality Plantation Shutters – How to Tell the Good From the Bad – Part 1 of 3

Plantation shutters can be purchased at almost every price imaginable. If you’re not a professional in the shutter industry, how do you distinguish between high-quality and low-quality products? There are a number of factors you can use to compare plantation shutters before making a commitment. In this article, we will explain how to tell the good from the bad.

Only wood plantation shutters will be discussed, since shutters made from MDF, composite, and polymer materials are different enough from wood plantation shutters in design and construction as to make fair comparisons impossible.

Telling High Quality From Low Quality

Let’s compare two typical plantation shutter panels to illustrate the differences between higher and lower quality shutters.

Visualize this: both panels are 12″ wide by 21″ tall. They’re made from the same Basswood, and have 3-1/2″ louvers. Even with these elements being identical, you will see some surprising differences in the design, construction, and components of the imported and the custom-made shutter.

Good Design Means A Better Fit With Your Window

The first difference between these two shutter panels is in the number of louvers they have and the overall louver area. The higher-quality shutter has 5 louvers, while the lower-quality shutter has only 4. The reason has nothing to do with aesthetics, but with how the shutters were designed. One is a true custom-made shutter that was designed and manufactured for a specific window; the other is known as “cut-to-fit.”

This design difference is the single most important factor in understanding a shutter’s quality. Here’s why:

The factory that makes the lower-quality shutters makes them to predetermined sizes; in this case, the heights of the shutters are made in 3-inch increments. So the factory makes shutters that are 18″, 21″, and 24″ tall. If none of these dimensions fits your window’s measurements exactly, the U.S. distributor takes a shutter the next size up and cuts it down to fit your window. This means the shutters have to be designed with taller rails and wider stiles so these pieces are large enough to cut down. For most customers, the result is a shutter with a larger area proportionally of stiles and rails, and a smaller area for the louvers. Fewer louvers mean less light and a more restricted view.

In contrast, the higher-quality shutter is customized to fit the window right from the start. Each shutter is designed to fit the measurements of a specific window in your home. In this sense, it’s like a suit that’s been tailor-made for its owner from the cutting of the fabric to the final fitting. The result is a more balanced shutter and a brighter and airier window.

While the cut-to-fit technique is less expensive, the overall lower quality is obvious even to the casual observer.

The Right Hinge Makes A Stronger Shutter

Two basic types of hinges are used on shutters: butt and non-mortise. When you unfold a butt hinge, it can resemble a butterfly, with the left flap the same size as the right one. With butt hinges, the two flaps fold together (or “butt up”) against each other.

In contrast, the left and right pieces of an open non-mortise hinge aren’t the same. Flaps on a non-mortise hinge fold one-above-the-other or one-inside-the-other. With non-mortise hinges, the two flaps are each only half the height of the hinge.

For butt hinges to fit properly, the edge of the shutter has to be mortised, or chiseled out, so that the hinge is counter-sunk into the shutter and its surface is flush with the surface of the shutter. In contrast, non-mortised hinges (as their name implies) do not require this sort of modification to the shutter.

It’s less expensive for manufacturers to use non-mortised hinges, since they don’t require mortising. However, non-mortise hinges are weaker than butt hinges, since each hinge flap is only half the size of a butt hinge flap. Weaker hinges may hold up well for a few years, but quality plantation shutters are made to last for decades.

Two Layers Are Better Than One

When plantation shutters are finished with paint or clear topcoats, some manufacturers try to save money by applying just one layer of topcoat over a stain, or only one layer of paint over primer. High-quality shutters have at least two coats of each.

A painted plantation shutter with only one coat of paint will have a rougher feel than one with two or more coats. And stained shutter will have a richer luster if a second layer of clear coat is applied.

Buy A Quality Shutter…But Don’t Buy More Than You Need

There are literally thousands of shutters on the market today. Most of them display a mix of high-quality and lesser-quality characteristics. Buying quality is important; but buying more shutter than you need is a waste of money. Hopefully you are now armed with the information to shop knowledgeably for the quality shutters you need and want for your home and lifestyle.
