How To Make The Perfect Potting Mix For Anthuriums

If you want to raise a vibrant anthurium plant, choosing the correct planting medium is vital. Pick the incorrect soil mix and your plant may develop slowly, stop making flowers, or worse, it might even die. To choose the best potting soil, first you'll need to learn more about where anthuriums grow in their native environment.

Anthuriums come from South America, where they live in lush, warm jungles, mainly on the trunks of forests or in the canopy of the forest.

Why do anthuriums grow on trees? They grow on trees because it enables them to receive a great deal of water from fog and rain, while still being exposed to drying breezes. They're paradoxical plants because they need a lot of water, but extended contact with moisture can harm them. By staying in trees, their roots are kept out of standing water and they are able to dry off a bit before the next rainfall.

When choosing a planting medium, you'll find that the major of off the shelf planting mixes retain too much water. So if you use these kinds of mixes your anthurium may have a short life as it slowly and gradually drowns from excessive water. What happens is that excess water blocks oxygen from the root system and it enables anaerobic germs and fungus to grow. These microorganisms then start attacking your plant and cause root rot.

To avoid this, you need to make your own potting soil. Your soil mix needs to drain quickly and it must be light and loose to keep your anthurium healthy. To make the best possible potting mixture blend: five parts miracle grow moisture control potting soil, 2 parts peat moss, 2 parts orchid planting media and 1 part perlite. Mix this together well and then plant your anthurium in it. This mixture works well, because it drains quickly and it comes closest to approximating the natural growing media of anthurium plants.

Cessna 182 – Tips for a Smooth Transition

One of the first upgrades most pilots face is the one from basic training aircraft to something with a bit more performance and complexity. At one time the common transition was from a Cessna 152 to a Cessna 172, or from Piper Tomahawk to Piper Warrior. As those very basic aircraft disappeared from training inventories for a few years, it became much more common to start off in a 172 or something similar, pushing the first transition to a more complex aircraft such as the Cessna 182.

According to the FAA, the 182, with an engine of over 200 horsepower, is considered a high performance aircraft. To fly a high performance aircraft the FAA requires you log ground and flight instruction with a certified flight instructor (CFI). Though the amount of time is not specified by the FAA, instructors commonly indicate around 5 to 10 hours as the amount of time required- though that may vary significantly based on a student’s background and experience.

While the 182 is classified as a high performance aircraft, it does not fit in the complex category. Though it has two of the three requirements (flaps, constant speed prop, retractable gear), its fixed landing gear means it’s not considered a complex aircraft.

Though the FAA may not consider the 182 complex, beginning students may think differently. As mentioned, the 182 adds a constant speed prop and cowl flaps to the already familiar controls. More weight means different handling techniques, and a bigger engine means more attention has to be paid to its management. Overall, these additional elements give more weight to the importance of following checklist procedures.

As far as what the new controls mean, the prop RPM will be controlled by the blue knob. The throttle will go from controlling the RPM as in a 172 to controlling the manifold pressure. Most of the time in the 182, ground ops, takeoff and landing will be with the prop control pushed all of the way in. That will give you the most power available. In cruise flight though, that setting isn’t very efficient, so you’ll bring the blue knob back to a slower RPM, which will have the propeller taking a bigger bite out of the air. The settings for RPM and manifold pressure vary slightly from one model of 182 to the next, so consult the POH for your particular aircraft for the exact numbers.

When adjusting the engine controls the inevitable question will arise as to which control to move first. The easiest way to remember is that the blue knob will stay in more than the throttle. So, when you want to increase power, lead with the prop control. When reducing power (as in leveling off), lead with the throttle.
Bigger engines tend to foul more easily than their smaller counterparts- meaning the proper leaning technique must be adhered to. Proper technique is to lean during taxing and in cruise flight. On the ground it’s usually sufficient to pull the mixture out an inch or so or just a bit before the engine coughs. In cruise you can lean by fuel flow or cylinder head temperatures based on the equipment in your aircraft. Check the POH for detailed instructions.

The cowl flaps are another thing to remember. They control the amount of cooling air flowing over the engine. Cooling air is good when it’s hot or you’re slow or on the ground; but it increases drag the rest of the time. For the 182 the cowl flaps will remain open until you reach cruise flight, then they can be closed. They will usually remain closed until landing. As in all cases, follow the checklist.

As for handling, the 182 is heavier in both roll and pitch than a 172. Pitch will be the first notable difference as you’re rolling down the runway for takeoff and realize that it will take a decided pull to get the nose moving up. That same characteristic will come into play on landing as it will take a conscious effort to keep the nose wheel up longer than the mains. Proper trim, which is more important in heavier planes, will minimize this effect. You should be trimming for hands off flight at all times. There are many 182’s that have suffered bent firewalls in testament to the importance of a good flare and proper trim.

The Cessna 182 is nothing to be intimidated by. It’s not much more difficult to fly than a 172, with the addition of some checklist items to keep in mind. After a few hours you will come to enjoy the increased speed, range and stability that it will give you.

Conflict Follows The Emotional Path of Lowest Resistance

Have you ever stopped to think why you respond to conflict like you do? This is not only interesting information, but very valuable information for anyone who finds conflict in their life … oh yes, that is ALL of us! I do not remember where I read this information, or I would give proper recognition, however, this is so good – I just have to share it.

What is conflict?

1. a serious disagreement or argument

2. incompatibility or at a variance; clash

What do we feel when we have conflict? We feel a range of emotions from anger, to fear, to hurt and so on.

The definition of emotion is: energy in motion

To add to that definition, emotional energy follows the path of least resistance. Where it has gone before it will go again!

Picture every emotion you have ever had. It was, indeed, energy in motion. And, we have all experienced the same emotions when we are in the midst of a conflict similar to others we have previously experienced.

Here is the part I find both fascinating and frustrating. Each time we find ourselves in a similar conflict – not only does our emotional energy follow the path of least resistance – but, each time that path is traveled the path becomes 10 times stronger! Picture a path through the grass that one person has walked down. Their may be very little evidence that the grass has even been walked on. But picture the same grass after ten people have walked on it and it is becoming quite compacted down. Picture once more that grass after one hundred people have walked on it. There is an undeniable path worn.

If we compare the grass to each time we have a particular emotional response … after just three times it has already had the equivalent of 100 people walking down that path.

It is not hard to see why, in the midst of conflict, we find ourselves having the same behavior, saying the same words and experiencing the same outcome.

I often respond poorly to conflict, but it is also possible to respond to conflict in better ways. Personally, I desire to turn the cycle around so that each time I experience the same, or similar conflict, the path I follow to ending (or diffusing) conflict becomes ten times easier.

Path # 1

Conflict occurs

Negative emotional arousal / response

Poor result

Emotional unrest

Path # 2

Conflict occurs

Positive (good / neutral) emotional arousal / response

Better result

Emotional rest

As a Christ follower, I am very aware that I am weak in my good intentions. That is why I count on God working in me to do this. I desire to change and He does the changing.

II Corinthians 12: 9 "… for my (God's) power is made perfect in weakness." – ESV

Philippians 2:13 "For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose." – NIV

Thank you God!

Wheelchair Scale

A wheelchair scale is used to measure the weight of a person while it is located on a wheelchair. The scale weighs people who can not stand on a regular weighing scale. This scale will give the user a correct and correct reading of his weight. The wheelchair scale gives out readings in a medical beam type of measurement or in the form of a digital readout. They are frequently used in doctor's clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, and of course, in a patient's home.

This type of a scale is very easy to use. The person on the wheelchair is pushed up on the scale and the machine will show the weight of both, the wheelchair and the one sitting in it. Subtract the weight of the wheelchair and you can get the weight of the person.

This is a very simple weigh to measure a wheelchair user and saves him the trouble and pain of being lifted up to a regular weighing scale. It also helps to avoid any sort of injury to the staff assisting the patient. The chances of the handicapped person falling off while stepping on to the regular weighing scale is eliminated with the use of this scale. The wheelchair scale gives the reading quickly, hence saves time.

We must also mention here that people who do not use wheelchairs but have weak knees or wounded legs can use this scale conveniently. Stepping on to the regular may be uncomfortable and painful for them. There is a small ramp in the wheelchair scale, which makes it easier for people with these problems.

There are many types of wheelchair scales available at medical shops and in the online market. Majority of these scales are designed to suit standard sized wheelchairs, however, the weight capacity of each scale may be different. Some of the scales come fully assembled and poses no trouble to the buyer for installing it. A non-skid variety is available that protects the user against slips and falls.

Some of these scales are portable, have wheels on them, and can be shifted to any location. Some other portable models are foldable, which makes these models popular with doctors going for home visits to their patients.

For men and women who can not stand up quickly by themselves, this scale is the ultimate solution to all their worries and miseries. The scale provides a painless remedy to people who wish to check their weight but can not depart from their wheelchair. The fact that he can be wheeled over to the scale smoothly for a perfect reading of his weight is the major factor leading to the growing demand for this scale.

Depreciation, Causes of Depreciation, Need for Provision of Depreciation

Life span of an asset to a business rests primarily, on the purpose of its acquisition and secondary, on its nature. An item acquired for immediate consumption or sale is a short-lived asset and that meant for prolonged use, is long lived asset, though both produce revenues. Whereas the former asset expires within one year of its acquisition, the latter asset lasts longer. Hence almost entire expenditure on a short lived asset becomes an expense and is matched against current year’s revenue.

But the position is otherwise with a long-lived asset which wears out or depreciates over a long period. Accordingly, the outlay of a fixed asset is spread over several years and annually only a fraction thereof expires. Simply, this fraction, called expired cost or depreciation, is charged against current revenues and the rest, termed un expired cost, is carried forward for future expiration.

“Depreciation may be defined as the permanent decrease in the value of an asset due to use and/or the lapse of the time.” -Terminology of Institute of Cost and Management Accountants, England

“Depreciation is the permanent and continuous diminution in the quality, quantity or value of an asset.” -Pickles

“Depreciation may be defined as measure of the exhaustion of effective life of an asset from any cause during a given period.” -Spicer and Pegler

“Depreciation is’ the gradual and permanent decrease in the value of an asset from any cause.”-Carter

Objects of making provision for depreciation

For attaining following objects, depreciation accounting is a must for every business:

(1) Recovery of cost incurred on fixed assets over their useful life so as to keep owner’s capital intact;

(2) Provision is for replacement cost on the retirement of original assets ;

(3) to include the depreciation in the cost of production to find out the correct cost of production;

(4) to find out correct profit for the year ;

(5) to find out the correct financial position through balance sheet.

Causes of Depreciation

Depreciation may be of two types :-

(1) Internal-Depreciation which occurs for certain inherent normal causes is known as internal depreciation. The causes of internal depreciation are :

(1.1) Wear and Tear-An asset declines on account of continued use e.g. building, plant,

machinery etc. such decline depends upon quantum of use of an asset. If a factory works double-shift instead of single shift, depreciation on plant and machinery will be doubled. It is obvious that such loss is unavoidable. An asset may be kept in proper working conditions

through repairs for the time being, but it can not be done so permanently: At one time the asset will become unfit for repairs, when it will no longer be suitable.

(1.2) Depletion-Some assets decline in value proportionate to the quantum of production, e.g. mines, quarry etc. With the raising of coal etc. from coal mine, the total deposit reduces gradually and after some time it will be fully exhausted. Then its value will be nil.

(2) External-Depreciation caused by some external reasons is called external

depreciation.

The causes of external depreciation are:

(2.1) Obsolescence

Some assets, though in proper working order, may become obsolete. For example old machine becomes obsolete with the invention of more economical and sophisticated machine, whose productive capacity is generally higher and cost of production is lesser. In order to survive in the competitive market the manufacturer must install new machine replacing the old one.

(2.2) Passage of time

Some assets diminish in value on account of sheer passage of time, even though they are not used e.g. lease hold property, patent rights, copy rights etc.

(2.3) Accidents

Assets may be destroyed by abnormal reasons such as fire, earth quake, flood etc. In such a case the destroyed asset may be written-off as loss and a new one purchased.

Need for Provision of Depreciation

The need for provision for depreciation arises for the following reasons:

(1) Ascertainment of true profit or loss-Depreciation is a loss. So unless it is considered like all other expenses and losses, true profit/loss cannot be ascertained. In other words, depreciation must be considered in order to find out true profit/loss of a business.

(2) Ascertainment of true cost of production-Goods are produced with the help of plant and machinery which incurs depreciation in the process of production. This depreciation must be considered as a part of the cost of production of goods. Otherwise, the cost of production would be shown less than the true cost. Sale price is normally fixed on the basis of cost of production. So, if the cost of production is shown less by ignoring depreciation, the sale price will also be fixed at a low level resulting in loss to the business;

(3) True Valuation of Assets-Value of assets gradually decreases on account of depreciation. If depreciation is not taken into account, the value of asset will be shown in the books at a figure higher than its true value and hence the true financial position of the business will not be disclosed through Balance Sheet.

(4) Replacement of Assets-After some time an asset will be completely exhausted on account of use. A new asset then be purchased requiring large sum of money. If the whole amount of profit is withdrawn from business each year without considering the loss on account of depreciation, necessary sum may not be available for. buying the new assets. In such a case the required money is to be collected by introducing fresh capital or by obtaining loan by selling some other assets. This is contrary &0sound commercial policy.

(5) Keeping Capital’ Intact-Capital invested in buying an asset, gradually diminishes on

account of depreciation. If loss on account of depreciation is not considered in determining profit/ loss at the year end, profit will be shown more. If the excess profit is withdrawn, the working capital will gradually reduce, the business will become weak and its profit earning

capacity will also fall.

(6) Legal Restriction-According to Sec. 205 of the Companies Act, 1956 dividend cannot be declared without charging depreciation on fixed assets. Thus in “Case of joint stock companies charging of depreciation is compulsory.

The Effect of Coffee on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Are you struggling with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

Do you like coffee? Find out what coffee and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia has in common.

Here is the latest result from clinical research on the effect of coffee on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), popularly known as prostate enlargement.

As man ages, the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) may become more evident by increasing urination urgency, and frequency as well, notably at night.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can cause a man to wake up to urinate as much as 6 times a night. The urgency in urinate is caused by the obstruction of the urethra, which is the canal through which the urine flows out of the bladder. The prostate is a nut-size gland located just below the bladder and around the urethra. As the prostate enlarges, squeezes the urethra, reducing the urine flow and also creating the sensation that the bladder is full when it may not. The symptoms and discomfort increases with age as the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia becomes more a serious condition if left untreated.

The treatments available for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia go from doctors to relax the prostate, which may relate the symptoms, to surgery. The choice of treatment depends on how bad are the symptoms of the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, and other health conditions. In the mean time, as you notice that the symptoms of the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia are getting worse, you may try a nutritional supplement for prostate. Most prostate supplements contain Saw Palmetto or Beta-sitosterol to relax the muscles that control the prostate gland, relieving the symptoms of the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

There is no doubt that caffeine increases the urgency and frequency of urination. I can tell about one of our associates; a man, 55 years old, struggling with the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Every night he wakes up every hour to urinate. It is not fun. He uses to drink a cup of coffee in the breakfast and other three or four cups of coffee during the day. He also likes soft drinks during lunch and dinner.

Here is what we know about coffee or drinks containing caffeine, which is the active ingredient in those drinks: Caffeine is highly diuretic. Caffeine acts on the blood cells, which in turn cause irritation of the prostate, increasing the sensation that the bladder is full, when it may not. Caffeine can cause the contracting of the tinny muscles that control the prostate, enhancing that bad sensation even further.

Other foods may also aggravate the symptoms of the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Like coffee, tea and chocolate contains high doses of caffeine and substances called theoxanthines, which are known as irritant to the prostate. The theoxanthines contained in the tea is much less, maybe about fifty percent of the theoxanthines contained in coffee. What these substances do is to stimulate the nervous system which in turn increases alertness, prompt muscle response and muscle contraction.

Any food containing caffeine can aggravate the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. If you feel urgency to urinate, the frequency is increasing, or makes you feel great discomfort in the prostate; you should discontinue or reduce the intake of coffee, or any other drink containing caffeine.

The best practice is to reduce the intake of caffeine gradually; otherwise it may cause headaches or nauseaa. The nervous system needs some time to reset its conditioning. After cutting off or reducing drastically the caffeine eye, you may note significant improvements. However, the results may not be immediate. It may take a few days to note a difference. If you have to resume the intake of coffee, try to replace regular coffee with decaf, or perhaps you may reduce the quantity and the number of cups a day. One thing is sure; If you are struggling with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia , you must choose and control you habits based on your health condition and physical comfort.

Are LED Flashlights Better Than Traditional Flashlights?

In almost every way, LED flashlights outperform traditional flashlights. Let's break down the pros and cons of flashlights that use LEDs over traditional incandescent flashlights.

1) Less Energy Consumption – LED flashlights use just a fraction of the energy incandescent flashlights consume. Incandescent lights work by heading a thin wire inside the bulb, creating both light and heat. Unfortunately, much of the energy needed to create light is lost in the form of heat. By using LEDs, less of the energy is lost to heat, meaning the same amount of light requires less energy to produce.

2) Brighter & Whiter Light Beam – Unlike incandescent bulbs, which produce more than a yellow, washed out color, LEDs produce a brilliant white light that is far brighter than what can be produced by an incandescent bulb. This is important when using a flashlight, as LEDs allow you to see farther and clearer.

3) Longer Lasting Bulb – As mentioned earlier, LED bulbs use less electricity than do incandescent bulbs. This equates to LED bulbs having a much longer life span than flashlights using incandescent bulbs. In the long run, this means saving you money on both batteries for your flashlight and purchasing replacement bulbs.

4) Increased Resistance To Impacts – Incandescent flashlights have a wire filament that acts as the light source. Unfortunately, these filaments are highly prone to breaking, giving even light falls and weak impacts to the flashlight a chance to break the filament. LED flashlights have no such filament and are so much more likely to be fine even after drops, impacts, and vibrations.

5) No Warm Up Delay – While this is not a problem for incandescent flashlights, there is a common misconception that LED Flashlights need a period of time to reach maximum brightness. Most people are confusing LEDs with CFL lights, which indeed do have a warm up time of up to a minute.

The only con of LED flashlights is that the initial cost for high quality LED flashlights may be higher than traditional flashlights, though those prices are quickly dropping as LED technology increases. In the long run, however, the cost of owning a flashlight that uses LEDs is lower, as the number of batteries used and replacement bulbs needed is less. If you're considering buying a flashlight sometime in the near future, consider an LED flashlight as a strong option. These flashlights are long-lasting, reliable, and give off brilliant light.

Your Fireplace's First Fire

As winter approaches, you may be one of the lucky few that have recently installed a new fireplace in your home. Whether it is a typical brick fireplace, or a contemporary type there are some things you need to understand before you start your first fire. One contemporary type, ventless gas models, essentially require the user to turn it on and the technology takes care of the rest, but other types require the user to build a fire similar to building a fire at a campsite or in an outdoor fireplace.

Here is a quick checklist and brief description of each item to get you started:

-Open the damper of the chimney

-Ensure the chimney has positive draft. In other words, the chimney and fireplace are designed to suck the smoke from the fire up the chimney shaft and outside the home instead of your living room. To do this, simply light a match and hold it adjacent to the start of the chimney outlet inside the firebox. The flame of the match should bend in the direction of the outlet. If this happens, your chimney is ready to go.

-Building a perfect fire starts with using seasoned firewood cut to the appropriate length. Seasoned firewood has typically been cut, split, and stacked a season prior to when it is used. If you do not have access to timber, you can find several local vendors which will be happy to sell you a cord of firewood.

-Place crumbled up paper under the wood grates, usually ten pieces of paper will work, then cover with small kindling or a premanufactured fire starter log.

-Safely light the crumbled up paper and its fire will light the kindling on fire. Once the kindling is on fire and is burning brightly, place a few (no more than three) small pieces of seasoned firewood onto the fire.

-Place the fireplace screen over the hearth or close the door on the wood burning fireplace insert.

-After the season firewood is burning swiftly, add a few additional pieces being careful not to tumble out the fire and not to overload the firebox creating excess heat.

While the fireplace is in use, it is important that the fireplace screen is in place for safety purposes. Many individuals have purchased contemporary fireplace accessories, including beveled glass enclosures or have designed their brick fireplaces to have integral inserts which have doors as opposed to screens or enclosures. Which ever type you have, safety remains first as burns from a fireplace can be very serious.

4 Types Of Home Insulation

Inspecting your home's insulation is one of the quickest and most cost-effective methods you can undertake to reduce your spend on energy.

With a correct mixture of products and construction procedures your home can be protected against air leaks and moisture as well as reducing the impact of the temperature outside. In fact, studies have shown that proper insulation can improve your home's temperature comfort by up to 10%.

If your house is built before 1980; if you find it overly cold in the winter or hot in the summer; if your energy bills are extreme; if you find noise from outside disturbs you; if you are extending or building; then you need to examine your insulation.

The first place to start checking is in your attic, ceiling, exterior and cellular walls, floors and crawl areas to determine what insulation you have and if it comes up to the recommended levels for your area.

Insulation material is measured in R-values. The higher the R-value the product carries, the better the level of protection against heat transfer.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has published a recommended range of R-values for all areas across the country determined by local climatic conditions and cost of energy.

Although insulation is available in a wide variety of materials, it typically comes in four types; each with it's own characteristics.

1) Rolls and batts (or blankets)
These are flexible and made from fibers, like fiberglass, rock wool, plastic or natural fibers. They are fitted between studies, joists, and beams and suitable for using in unfinished walls, floors and ceilings.

2) Loose-fill
This is generally made of fiberglass, rock wool, or cellulose and comes in small particles. It is installed by being blown into the space using a special pneumatic blower. It is great for adding insulation to existing areas, oddly shaped areas and around obstacles.

3) Rigid foam
Whilst generally more expensive than fiber products, it is very effective in buildings with space limitations and where higher R-values are needed. It is often used in unfinished walls; ceilings and floors; and un-vented low-slope roofs.

4) Foam-in-place
Is blown into walls and reduces air leakage. Good for adding insulation to existing completed spaces, irregularly shaped spots, and around obstructions.

There are many different variations of the four types listed above and literally hundreds of different products to choose form. Many homeowners are opting for a more 'green' approach and opting for natural products like wool. And many are even building homes using old techniques such as straw bale construction.

What ever the insulation option you choose, you will be impressed with the better temperature control and hopefully will even even impress with a reduction in your energy bills.

How to Make an Ex Boyfriend Regret Leaving You

I'm guessing you are angry, hurt, confused, or all of the above. Your Ex Boyfriend split, and left you to pick up all the pieces. You might want to sit in your room and cry all day. Or maybe you are in the angry stage, and you want to go dump a drink on his head and slash his tires.

Take a deep breath. I'm going to tell you a healthy revenge tool. It is has been used by thousands of women to get under the skin of someone who rejected them. Here is what they did. They took all that emotional energy from the breakup, and used it to transform them into a New Woman.

Now, it may be difficult to find that ambition right now. There might be some roadblocks ahead. When women go through a terribly rough breakup, we naturally want comforting. Unfortunately, we may be used to going into our (ex) man's arms for that comfort, and now that is clearly not an option. Plus, he's the one that caused the discomfort in the first place!

Please seek out comfort amongst your good friends and confidants. They will be very important to you during this time. But be careful. It is also easy to seek comfort in unhealthy activities like getting plastered or eating way too much food or neglecting our fitness routines. None of these things will help you in the long run.

Be a Woman who found their best revenge! Take these negative and confusing emotions and energy imbalances you have, and turn it into something that will not only make your Ex look twice (with regret), but more importantly, empower You.

You can kill two birds with one stone. You can inflict "dumper's remorse" on your Ex, in a healthy way, and also make yourself hot! This is something you will be doing for yourself, your health, and most likely your new "hottie" waiting for you on the horizon.

Get a new hairstyle, go clothes shopping, get a makeover. All of these things are very fun to do. But to really have a true change from within to make you Extra Hot, you need to embark on a healthy eating and exercise plan. You can change your body from the inside out. And then if you combine your health plan with new clothes, hair, makeup, etc, the sky is the limit as to how hot you can really become!

This may sound artificial, but it is your time now. Go for it. I want you to fee good inside, and eating healthy and exercising will give you long-term comfort that temporary comforts can never give you. It will also be a magnificent move to make your Ex turn his head. And of course, you will pretend not to notice him!

Now, I'm not promoting you get all anorexic or over exercise. No, that is another denial method all in itself. I'm encouraging you to re-shape and re-think this break up. Maybe it has freed you to concentrate on becoming your Best and Hottest Self!

Your Guide to an Efficient Filing System

Your Guide to Filing

An efficient filing system has become critical, but still, more often than not, filing systems are accepted without consideration to WHAT is being stored, WHY it's been stored, WHERE and HOW it's been stored. You need to ensure resources are not wasted by replacing your filing system just for replacement sake; it may well be that your current filing system will meet your required criteria by adopting different soft folder and indexing formats.

Many filing organizations will recommend replacing your current system with space efficient filtering systems without consideration to the filing process.

Filing Facts

The freedom of Information Act and the Data Protection Act has made a huge impact on the way records are stored.

Certain types of records have to be stored by law for certain periods of time.

The amount of paper and records stored by organizations is increasing every year.

Misplaced or lost records cost many organizations a substantial amount of money through lost time looking for them. Some types of records will also incur an organization a heavy fine if the record can not be produced on demand.

Clear indexing and identifiable records will speed up the retrieval process for when the file is needed – not when it is too late.

An ineffective filing system will take up more floor space costing the organization more money through floor space rates.

An efficient filing system will save time, space and money making your organization run much more effectively, leading to greater success.

Filing Audit

If you want to improve your filing efficiency you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of your current filing system. The questions below are a good list of questions that once answered will outline specific areas that need attention.

The Records

o How are your records stored? (Lever Arch, Foolscap file)
o What is the volume of records in linear meters
o Are there any duplicates or copies? If so what for?

Indexing

o How effective is your indexing?
o What do you like or dislike about your indexing?
o Is misfiling a common occurrence?

File Storage

o How effective is the storage system?
o What do you like or dislike about it?
o What are the present floor space costs?

Record Access

o How frequently are records retrieved from the system?
o How many people use the filing system?
o Do the records need to be secure?
o Are records returned accurately and on time?

Record Tracking

o Are the records needed for filing Audits?
o How do you keep track of your records?
o Does your tracking system work?

Evaluating your system

The answers to the above should enable you to evaluate:

o Records which are not needed could be archived or destroyed
o Records needing consolidation
o Any indexing improvements
o Effectiveness of the system

Creating an efficient filing system

o Avoid complicated indexing methods
o Avoid handwritten indexes
o Before opening a new record make sure its unique.
o When indexing a record think of the first identifying reference that comes to mind
o Be specific with titles, never use general or miscellaneous.
o Allocate a unique reference ID.
o All correspondence in the file should be dated or marked for reference
o Separate archive from live records

Further details on file creation refer to RMS 1.1 Standard written by the National Archives.

Tracking Records

What happens to your records when they are away from the system?

Case studies show that traditional tracking methods have become inefficient and unreliable An electronic system using a barcode or RFID tags will improve file tracking.

Locating and Controlling Records must be efficient. Record users should be able to file and retrieve records quickly and efficiently.

Tracking records in a filing system should:

o Assist with accurate retrieval of records
o Ensure access of records to staff authorized to do so
o Assist with record retention periods
o Record a complete history of a record's movement

If a record is removed from the system, the following information should be documented:

o The record's index details
o Who retrieved the record
o The date the record was retrieved
o A proposed return date and the actual return date

Conventional Filing Methods Vs End Tab Color Coded Filing Methods

It has been established by the industry that traditional suspended pocket filing is the most inefficient way of storing documentation. The suspended file pocket, by design, is estimated to waste between 15-20% of valuable storage space within the system. Furthermore, suspended file sockets have a tendency to split and as a result cause misfiling / lost files.

File Indexes in a hand-written or text-printed format can be difficult to read enhancing the opportunity for slow retrieval and misfiling.

Using standard folders, filing / retrieval times are slow and misfiling is a common occurrence purely because another folder hides a records index.

Portrait Lever Arch Files are designed with a fixed center of between 73-78mm, invariably the folder houses less capacity than the file offers wasting valuable shelf storage space, in addition because of its design, fewer storage levels can be achieved in a standard storage system .

By simply employing a color coded index system these inherent problems can be overcome.

Disposal

Disposing of records is an important part of maintaining control of your records. Before a disposal schedule is put into place you must understand all of your legal and regulatory business requirements.

Legal and regulatory requirements including the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Public Records Act 1958 all effect the disposal of records. All have imposed new and more stringent duties on public sector bodies with regards to records disposal.

So what does this mean?

Disposal does not mean destruction. It means any action taken to determine the fate of the record including transfer to an archive system. When it is not possible at any time to determine the disposal of the records they may be scheduled for review at a later date.

Retention usually means the length of time records are kept, sometimes known as disposal schedules. If a disposal schedule is not put into place, the standby is to store records indefinitely taking up unnecessary space.

Confidential information must be stored securely and disposed of by way of shredding.

For further details on disposing scheduling please refer to Disposal Scheduling (RMS 5.1) Standard written by the National Archives.

Polystyrene Insulation – Foam Board Insulation

Foam Board Insulation is based on covering indoor or outdoor surfaces of building in order to prevent heat losses to the surrounding.

There are several material used for the production of these foam core boards, of which Polystyrene is the most widely used.

Polystyrene is an aromatic polymer made from styrene monomer. Polystyrene is among the most used types of plastic for general use. Chemically, polystyrene is a long-chain hydrocarbon, with every other carbon molecule connected to a phenyl group. Discovered in 1839, polystyrene became ubiquitous, being used in the production of a variety of objects both for general and industrial use.

Polystyrene, in its foam form proved to be a very good thermal insulator and damping material. This quality made it well suited for the production of foam core boards used in foam board insulation, and also for the construction of non-weight bearing structures.

The foam boards made from polystyrene foam are of two main types, differenting by manufacturing process and by the properties they exhibit.

The one most widely used form of polystyrene foam core board is Molded Expanded Polystyrene.

Molded Expanded Polystyrene is a closed-cell material, which, molded in desired shapes is used for making various items. The most common use of Molded Expanded Polystyrene is packaging material, taking advantage of its excellent damping qualities.

Making foam boards from MEPS, implying mixing unexpanded polystyrene beads with a blowing agent and pouring the mixture into a container which is heated to allow the beads to expand. The expanded beads are injected into a pressurized mold, transforming them to foam. The foam is then shaped to make the boards, which is used for the foam board insulation.

The second type of boards is those made from Extruded Expanded Polystyrene, or XEPS. While similar to MEPS, XEPS is made by liquefying polystyrene pellets mixed with several chemicals and then adding a blowing agent which forms gas bubbles. This thick liquid is then extruded trough a die, and after cooling is cut and shaped as needed.
