Feline urine is basically a way of communication between cats – It can mean "Back Off" or "I'm in Heat" for example. Every cat has a different smell, and this is used by cats to tell who is who.
So when a feline urinates in your house, he is just marking his territory. It just lets other cats know the territory is his. This is why getting mad at your cat will solve nothing. And of course, the smell for people is horrible, the same message for cats does not transfer well across species. Cats want to spray outside, and most cats do a majority of their spraying there. But if you keep your cat inside, then spraying is of course, a big problem. If you notice your cat spraying – make sure you do something about it.
The most effective way to stop your cat spraying is to get him neutered or spayed, depending on the sex. Male cats that have been neutered often stop spraying very quickly, sometimes in the same day as the surgery. If you do not want your cat neutered / spayed, you need to look for other ways. Of course, if you want to breed your cat, do not have him / her neutered or spayed.
