Tips for Stopping Your Cats Spraying

Every time your kitten begins to back himself up to a sofa or something else, lifts his leg and begins to pee – You have another mess to clean up. This problem is commonly known as "Spraying" and it becomes very common with an indoors cat. It may seem impossible, but it can be solved. Most kitten owners tend to think that spraying is a result of a litter box problem, but instead it is actually to do with marking their territory. Feline urine is basically a way of communication between cats – It can mean "Back Off" or "I'm in Heat" for example. Every cat has a different smell, and this is used by cats to tell who is who.

So when a feline urinates in your house, he is just marking his territory. It just lets other cats know the territory is his. This is why getting mad at your cat will solve nothing. In fact, getting angry might provoke the cat into trying to make it clear that this is His house (which it is in his eyes) which means more spraying.

As mentioned, cats can use this to attract a mate. For cats in heat, spraying is an invitation for mating. Cats that spray in heat often result in a litter of kittens in just a few months. Cats not only spray during heat though – Some will also spray during encounters with other cats or when they are stressed.

And of course, the smell for people is horrible, the same message for cats does not transfer well across species. Cats want to spray outside, and most cats do a majority of their spraying there. But if you keep your cat inside, then spraying is of course, a big problem. If you notice your cat spraying – make sure you do something about it.

The most effective way to stop your cat spraying is to get him neutered or spayed, depending on the sex. Male cats that have been neutered often stop spraying very quickly, sometimes in the same day as the surgery. If you do not want your cat neutered / spayed, you need to look for other ways. Of course, if you want to breed your cat, do not have him / her neutered or spayed.

In this situation your are going to want to talk to your vet. She / He can give you personalized advice, and resolve this problem without your cat having surgery. Your cat may be suffering from a medical problem, which your cat can identify. Do something about spraying as soon as it starts – Cat urine stinks and will leave stains all over your home.
