Types of Otoscopes

The otoscope is used for checking the process inside the ear. Using this tool a health care professional can see beyond the outside and get a visual indication of the health of the middle ear. With an otoscope, a doctor can identify and analyze many ear-related problems. Ear check up is a necessary part of regular health check-ups and the otoscope is the primary tool for assessing proper hearing health.

The otoscope consists of a head part and handle. The head is made up of simple low-power magnifying lens, light source and a few diopters. All otoscopes come with a disposable fitting or cover so each patient is given a sanitary exam. Based on a variety of features, there are several types of otoscopes available.

Battery operated otoscope

The battery-powered otoscope provides great mobility for the user. With this added mobility, providers can visit patients in a variety of environments including schools, homes and senior care facilities.

Using the device is simple for the trained professional. In order to adjust light inside the ear, it has one dial. Increasing the magnification is also simple and necessary to zero in on specific areas of the ear.

It’s mandatory that before using this otoscope battery should be fully charged to insure a complete exam for every patient. Moreover, a weak light output can make it difficult to determine a proper diagnosis.

Wall-mount otoscope

As the name suggests, the wall-mounted otoscope is fixed to the wall and powered by AC power from the wall. Using AC makes it reliable for hours of use. While uninterrupted power is a distinct advantage, mobility is limited to the exam room only.

Open head Wall-mount otoscope

This provides any instrument or plug-in to get attached with it for some extra output while examining the ear of the patient. The open-head otoscope allows more attachments.

Close head Wall-mount otoscope

It has a fixed, closed head. This system is easier to use, has less attachments and is stationary.

Video otoscope

This otoscope is same as handheld otoscope and includes a video recording feature. The video control records a clip and amplifies it before sending the output to the video screen. Another amazing feature of the video otoscope is that it can link up with printer in order to print the status of ear drum. Using this Video otoscope, the ear canal can be easily and minutely monitored. Moreover, the video output can be amplified when attached to larger screen. For the curious patient, the output video can be displayed on a monitor for both doctor and patient to view.

In addition to function, otoscopes are available in many sizes, as well. The correct one should be selected based on the patient, mobility, volume and type of clinic.
