Why is My Handrail Damaged? Home Maintenance and Protection Tips

There are plenty of homeowners, building contractors and other people who are involved in the new home building process that do not have any idea, how the products that they are assembling can deteriorate or suffer from wood rot damage. Here's a couple of home maintenance and protection tips that can save homeowners a couple of bucks.

If your wood handrail is located on the exterior of your home, you need to pay attention to what I'm about to say. If any moisture accumulates around your wet handrail, sits on the handrail for a long time, before it finally evaporates or soaks into the wood, or if your wood handrail is not painted and maintained properly, you could be paying a home repair person, to repair your neglected wood handrail.

Whether you live in a moist climate or a dry climate, extreme weather conditions can wreak havoc on almost any kind of wood. If you're wood handrail is located in a shaded area, it is going to be susceptible to wood rot, if there is any moisture around it or on it.

The shade will prevent the moisture from evaporating and this will give it more time to soak into the handrail. The more moisture that will be absorbed, the better your chances are that your handrail will soon start to rot, collect moss and even toxic mold.

Now what about a dry climate or a handrail that is directly exposed to the sun for long periods during each day, if not maintained properly, the wood could actually start to crack as it starts to lose all of its moisture.

Dry and moist climates can affect wood handrail's. Here's what I would like to suggest, make sure that you paint your wood handrails on a regular basis. In other words, as the paint starts to flake off and you start to see the bare wood, it's time to paint your handrail. It does not get any simpler than that, make sure that you maintain your wood handrails and you will not have to pay anyone for a while to repair them.
